Kevin Smith should stick to writing.
Written: Nov 25 '99
Pros:funny, entertaining, good for Kevin Smith fans
Cons:bad acting, weird shite monster, salma hayak not nude
Well, one thing is for sure, Kevin Smith's movies lack that Hollywood polish. While that can be a good thing, in some ways that lack of polish kills you.
Take acting for instance. The acting in Smith's movies sucks...and this one was no exception. I realize that the actors in Dogma don't need to be conveying deep seeded emotional energy to the audience, but could it kill them to sound as if they are not reading directly from the cue cards. At times, I thought I was watching an episode of Saturday Night Live.
Fortunately, Smith is a pretty good writer and knows what his audience wants....or at least what to give them. Smith's old standbys - excessive profanity and pop movie references - were in full force, providing several laughs.
Overall, I liked the film and would recommend it, but I am disappointed with Smith's lack of progress in his craft.
