The world of psychic phenomenon has always been an area of curiosity for me. Needless to say this made 'The Sixth Sense' a must see for me. I rented the movie with the intent of watching it alone as my wife generally does not like such movies. However, after watching the opening scenes, she was as engrossed as I in the plot.
An award winning child psychologist is shot by a former patient who blames him for his own current plight in life. Several months later he is determined to help another little boy in the same condition as the first. Throwing himself completely into his work it appears he is driving his once devoted wife away from him and into the arms of one of her employees.
The young boy on the other hand struggles with the curse of the sixth sense. Being able to see dead people walking around in the condition of their death is too horrible to be called a gift. The young boy actually interacts with many of the 'ghosts' and is physically injured by them at times. Afraid to share his plight with his mother or doctor, he is determined to suffer through life and hope they go away. After a hopitalizing event though he opens up to his doctor and begins a string of events that causes the doctor to come to a startling revelation. The boy is NOT delusional. He DOES see and interact with dead people, ALL the time.
The plot of this movie is well thought out and followed through. It leads you from one surprise to another with great care and thoughtfulness. The integrity of the plot is superb. Even with a tremendous surprise ending, you can not go back and find where the makers have made a mistake in the story line. Even second, third, forth or more viewings, scrutinized dilligently, will not allow you to find a flaw in the integrity of the plot.
The Sixth Sense is truly one of the best movies of the year. Everything about it is well done. Cast, direction, cinematography, music score and all the things that make a movie great are here. The only negative aspect of this movie is the graphic images sometimes displayed. Otherwise it is a movie one will want to watch again and again, if for no other reason than to 'catch' the producers in a mistake. Which they won't.
