Pros: an eye opener for any marriage, hits home about marriage.
Cons: none
The Bottom Line: The Story of Us is a good movie to watch if you have hard ships in your marriage. This movie was a real eye opener for my husband and I.
Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
I have to say I was quite surprised when I seen so many low ratings on the Story of Us, but it is one of my favorite movies. Let me begin by saying last year I came into many marriage troubles and this movie was recommended to my husband and I by our marriage counselor. It was a real eye opener.
Story of Us was directed by Rob Reiner( who stars in the film as Willis’s best friend). The story is about a couple Ben Jordan(Bruce Willis) and Katy Jordan(Michelle Pfieffer) who have two children ages 10 and 12. They look like an every day happy couple, until they alone together. Then they start to argue and challenge their love. The couple have been married for 15 years. They just do not seem to meet eye to eye. But, do any of us who are married?
The couple takes their kids to a camp and drops them off at summer camp and then they decided to separate. Ben eventually ends up in an apartment and Katy stays in the house. During the duration of the film, the couple have many vivid memories. Many of the memories are happy ones, and many are sad. There are some intense arguing scenes, so I personally do not recommend young children watching the film.
Katy turns to her friend for advice and they ponder on how men think. Ben turns to his friends for advice and they seem to ponder what is right about cheating. It really makes you sit back and think about the difference in our thinking habits between men and woman. There is definitely some eye openers here.
During the movie, the couple go to visit the kids at camp and they try to act as if everything is normal as can be. The daughter seems to catch on to what is going on. One night she goes into their visiting room and sees that the parents are sleeping apart from each other and questions it. Of course Ben and Katy have the “right answer” and the couple and their daughter end up all laying in the bed together while the couple continue to relive memories in their minds.
After the stay at the camp with the kids, they leave and go back to trying to figure out why they fell in love with each other. They continued to be separated. Katy met up with an old friend and they start to talk. Of course, the friend is a man and they end up over at Katy’s home to have dinner together. Ben knocks on the door to visit and sees what is going on. It was just a friendly meeting, but of course Ben is torn apart.
The couple, Ben and Katy, continue through out the movie, having many memories of the past 15 years including the children’s births all the way to the most intense arguing. To sum it up, Ben and Katy go back to the camp to get the kids and they seem to have realized what they have together. The couple end up back together. And of course, the story ends.
I highly recommend this movie especially if you are facing hard ships in your marriage. This movie will really make you think about your marriage. My husband and I enjoyed the movie. I will admit there are times when you will cry, especially at the end. This movie is a true eye opener. This movie did not save my marriage, of course it took us willing to work together and months of marriage counseling, but the movie makes you think about what you have as a couple.
