As a die-hard football fan I was extremely excited that a movie was being made to cover professional football. Unfortunately, this movie didn't even come close to meeting expectations.
The plot was mediocre at best, and the action sequences were TERRIBLE!!!
The cast of the film was, for the most part, very good and it had the potential be a really good film. But then the movie started...and nothing good happened in the movie. The movie had less to do with how a team struggles over the course of a season (as the name implies) and just deals with one coaches struggle (for the most part) with a cocky upstart quarterback.
The other topics in the movie are brushed over in little 5-10 minute subplots that don't really add anything to the film but seem more like "little" attempts to address all possible issues a coach deals with when running a team. Needless to say they were very superficially covered.
The action sequences as well were terrible. Just because quick-cuts and tight angles worked extremely well for JFK does not mean they work well for all movies. For someone who watches tons of football on a weekly/monthly/annual basis...I had little-to-no clue what was going on for many of the action/sports sequences. All you could see is a bunch of bodies crunching into each other and toppling over each other. Maybe that's how the game feels as a player...but it does not provide any sense of how the plays are unfolding and what's going on from a fan perspective. If anyone went into this movie not a football fan, and thinking maybe they'd understand better how the game works and what it's all about by watching the film. They will NOT. This movie will instead probably reinforce and opinions that football is in fact a complicated game that is not easily understood. And as a fan I think that's a shame. It's not a very good film in terms of bringing new fans to the game.
There were a few good sequences towards the middle/end with Al Pacino that perhaps made for enjoyable watching, but all in all...there was not much there to like.
Oh well...can't win them at all at the box office. And if you avoid this one...you'll save yourself a bad night at the movies.
