The only way I know how to describe this movie is beautifully poetic and tragic. I can agree with some of the other reviews saying that the timing is not the best, but as you watch this movie and if you are open-minded you can see that this movie is not about school violence, it is about how the public wants to view those that are not from the best of homes, or those who want to label people or judge people. The basic purpose of this movie is for us to realize that if we see an African-American walking down the street in Harlem with a bandana on his head, he is very possibly not in a gang, or if you see a white girl with dyed hair and pregnant, it doesn't mean that she is easy. This movie is trying to break everyday stereotypes.
After a teacher is suspended, very possibly the only teacher that sees a future for these kids, they go to the principal of the school to know why. (He took them off campus, so they did not have to freeze in the classroom with broken windows and no heat.) He was just trying to help these kids. It breaks into maddness. The principal suspends 3 students and tells them to wait for their parents. One of the kids looses it and fights with the security guard, while struggling, the security guards gun is brought out and he is accidentally shot in the leg.
Yes, they take the guard hostage, only because the boy that was in the struggle had abusive parents and if he was sent home, he may have easily ended up dead. With the exception of the security guard, they let everyone go. Only about 8 students remain. All they ask for is for their teacher to be brought back and books so they can actually learn. Every school deserves that, even the guard that is shot starts to support them.
This movie is very poetic and if you liked Dangerous Minds you will like this movie. I think if you see it, you may walk away with less stereotypes set in your mind. Maybe when you see me walking down the street with my daughter and no husband at the age of 23, you won't think any less of me. We all go through hard times, this movie just expresses them.
