Bittersweet six
Written: Jun 08 '00
Pros:original. thought-provoking. well-written.
Cons:some questions left unanswered.
It's the last night on earth. What are they going to do? Although that's the main premise of this film, it turns into something different because of course, there's no guarantee that you'll be able to do what you most want to do. The film follows various characters and events during the world's final six hours.
In the film we get to know several characters -- a wife who has a plan about ending it with the one she loves, a mother who wants some sort of dysfunctional family Christmas Dinner, a man who wants to be all alone, another man who wants to realize every sexual fantasy he's ever had, another who wants to give a concert performance and a bunch of kids who just want to party.
The movie might be described as a dark comedy, because it does have an offbeat humour running throughout. Overall though, it's quite a commentary on how people behave in crisis and what they think is important to them. The character development is so complete and thorough... and even though we get to know them well they still surprise us. It was not easy to figure out "what's going to happen next" like in so many movies.
Don McKellar wrote, directed and acted in this film and if you've ever seen "Highway 61" or "Twitch City" or "Roadkill," you know that what you can expect -- well written, well acted, offbeat, thought provoking, at times almost mesmerizing. Stuff that's very difficult to "pigeonhole" but definitely worth seeing.
It made me wonder, as I'm sure it would anyone who watched it, what I would do with my last six hours. And of course, if you think about what's that important to you, why aren't you doing it now? (Well, not right now, because you're watching the film, but right now as in your daily life...)
