I am not a professional movie reviewer by any means. I've never seen more than 5 minutes of any other anime film, Saturday morning Pokemon cartoons excluded.
Given those two things, Princess Mononoke is one of the very best films I have seen all year. The beginning sequence with the demon boar astounded me, and the rest of the movie kept my mouth hanging open until the end. There are no easy questions or answers in this film, even though they seem to be cramming a very enviro-friendly message down the audience's throat.
I especially liked how this, like the Iron Giant, was not a typical animated Disneyesque movie...everything Disney has put out pales in comparison to the depth and imagination offered up by this film. There were a few points in the film where I actually felt as if I were in a magical place with magical creatures rather than just watching them up on the screen. Involving cynical, jaded, old me in a movie to that extent is a difficult thing to do, and Princess Mononoke succeeded wonderfully.
