Decade: The Snowboard Progression of 1998

Written: Feb 12 '05
  • User Rating: Excellent
  • Action Factor:
Pros:Lots of Snowboarders, Good Soundtrack, Good Progressive Tricks
Cons:A few of the handrail tricks are weak compared to today's standards
The Bottom Line: Decade is a great movie to watch before going snowboarding or during the summer.

Since 1988, Mack Dawg Productions had been producing the best skateboard/snowboard films around. In 1998, Mack Dawgs 10 year anniverery, the company released a video of a summary of Mack Dawg's first ten years and the progression of 1998.

I purchased this video recently from ebay. Even through it does not compare to todays video's, Decade is a fun video to watch. The video features all of the legendary Forum 8 team and a cast of other riders including Terje Haakonsen, Jamie Lynn, and others.

After the summary of Mack Dawgs first 10 years, forum rider JP Walker gets the first section. He is known today as the best handrail jibber and rail slider. His section of the video shows him in his earlier years doing what he is known for best. This is one of the best sections of the video.

Following JP Walker, is another Forum rider Wille Louma, followed by a section consisting of Josh Dirksen, Blaise Rosenthal, and Chad Otterstrom. This part has one of the best music selections of the movie.

Up next is yet another Forum rider, Devun Walsh. Today Devun is known for dominating the backcountry. His part has a little of everything including handrails and backcountry booters. Also in the same section is a great rail rider in Dave Downing who performs well. The section ends with Joey McGuire and Brien Thien.

....another Forum Rider gets his own section in the next part, Bjorn Leines shows great skill. Today he is regarded as the best all around snowboarder (forum riders are good...) and this section proves that. A highlight is a shot of him sliding a long handrail with a curve in it.

Ah, finally a section not started by a Forum rider... the legend Terje Haakonsen goes first...but only has two tricks, both big grabs off a quarter pipe. The rest of the section, much like Terje's part, have legends of snowboarding or have younger boarders with really short parts, in fact a rider in this section has only ONE trick!

Jason Borgstede opens the next section of the movie with some nice tricks, followed by another forum rider Chris Dufficy who throws down some more good stuff. This is followed by everyone's favorite, a crash section section. This is pretty funny and the music selection is funny.

The final two sections belong to more Forum riders (finally the last two)

Jeremy Jones starts sliding over a tree trunk that is on fire, which is a good way to start it off. The section is only about 1:30 with only about a minute of snowboarding. One cool snowboarding thing is his soccer goal jib and one cool non-snowboarding thing is his huge backflip off a tall diving board.

The last section of the movie belongs to the most dominant snowboarder at the time, Peter Line. He proves he is the best at the time by performing a few rodeos (a trick he invented, which is basically a backflip combined with a spin). He also lands a 900, which is two and a half rotations of the body, not many snowboarders could do these at the time. After some solid snowboarding the credits roll.

I like decade because it has some elements in it that today's snowboarding videos do not. Decade has alot of park jumps and park rails, which are not found much in today's videos. It also has "tree plants" where the boarder plants his board on a tree and then spins, I dont think ive ever seen one of those outside of this movie.

Another major plus is the soundtrack of the movie is pretty good. In comparison to recent Mack Dawg movies, which have lots of Hip Hop and Rap, this movies soundtrack is mainly punk and rock. A major bonus of buying Mack Dawg videos are you also get stickers and a bonus CD.

If you are intrested in snowboarding, or allready snowboard, Decade is a great movie because you can look back at the past of snowboarding and see how far it has progressed.
