The Plot
I realize you most likely know what is going on, but I will humor you and perhaps tell you more than you already know:
Alex Browning (Sawa) is embarking on a trip to Paris with his class of 40. He obviously fears the possibility of the plane crashing, he checks the plane for rust, and does other little oddball things like that. While he is strapping himself into his seat the viewer watches as two of his classmates walk up and ask him to switch seats. He agrees, and moves up to sit near a friend. When he goes to put the tray table up the piece to hold it on falls off. Nervous, he sits down awaiting the plane’s take off. When it does, the cabin starts to shake and everyone freaks out, until finally the plane blows up.
The next thing we see is Alex in his first seat in a cold sweat. Then two of his classmates come and ask (in the exact same words) if he will switch seats. He freaks out and runs to the replacement seat and frantically tries to put the tray table back up, guess what happens…that’s right…the switch breaks.
Completely freaked out he dashes into the isle screaming the plane is going to blow up. A few friends (and people who aren’t friends) jump into the isle to calm him down, only to be thrown off the flight along with him. Needless to say, everyone is very angry that they have been taken off the plane…Well, except for one girl who got off because she believed what Alex said.
The students will be put on a later flight, however, they are angry for loosing a half of a day in Paris. One guy is so angry with Alex that the two start fighting in the airport. As they do, we see the plane take off in the background, only to blow up seconds later.
If you were one of the people that were taken off the plane, what would you think?
Better yet, what would you think if everyone who got off the plane started to die?
Well, our hero Alex figures out that there has to be a pattern. And there is…the next step is to beat the pattern. How to go about beating death is the driving force in the movie (obviously) And the edge of your seat is where you will be when you find out if death can be beaten. If you want to know more…Go see the movie!—rather, wait for it on tape
My Opinion
When I went to see this I wasn’t quite sure what to think. I thought that the lead character, for some reason, was Jonathan Jackson. When I saw the name “Devon Sawa” flash across the screen in the credits I shook my head thinking “What have I gotten myself into?”
Turns out, I got myself into a really good movie. The plot was predictable to the fullest extent, but it was very well done. The presentation was great. I loved how the movie let you in on things as long as you are observant enough.
The cast was also great. As I previously said, I saw Devon Sawa, who is known for such great achievements such as “Idle Hands”. Now, don’t get me wrong. The characters were not great, but I don’t think that was the fault of the actors. Every one of them seemed to do the best with what the script had to offer.
Overall the movie was very good, I am not willing to say it is one of the best I have seen, but I would definitely take the time to see it again once it comes out on video.
