I did not know what I would be watching when I rented “Final Destination” . I remember seeing the movie trailers when it was released earlier this year. I also recalled reading a few mix reviews from fellow epinionators about this movie while it was still in the theaters. However, the movie trailer or epinion reviews about “Final Destination” did not pushed me towards the direction of my local movie theater. My interest in this movie just faded into the sunset.
I found myself emerging into unknown territory the other day after a beacon of light pointed to the DVD version of “Final Destination” while I was at Blockbuster the other day. Okay…I confess…I rented this movie because my first video selection was checked out and I didn’t want to leave Blockbuster empty handed.
“Final Destination” is a tale about a teenage boy (Alex) who plans to take a trip to Paris with some friends from high school. As he boards the plane he begins having a strong premonition about the plane exploding. Suddenly he awakens in a panic from what seems like a dream and begins telling everyone on the plane what will happen. He is then removed from the aircraft with a few other colleagues. What seemed like a dream-like premonition becomes reality as the plane explodes while in the air.
Does Alex have ESP? Can he see into the future? Can he predict when death will come to others? These are the questions you are exposed to as you explore more of Alex’s bizarre premonitions into the world of the unknown.
This movie does have its flaws. For instance, Alex has develops a theory that “Death has a design” and this design can be changed. You’ll find yourself watching a wondering which of the colleagues will die next after “cheating death" the first time around.
Funny, but I found this movie both engaging and predictable. I found myself gashing for air as each character got the ax and then exhaling a “WHAT!” as the movie went on to the next scene.
“Final Destination” does “go for the shock value” each time death approaches a character. The movie walks along the same type of path of such past movie releases as “Scream” (and its two sequels) and “I know what you did last summer” but without the outward expressions of sex. As a matter of fact the DVD version has a section which talks about what the writer and producer decided to “go for” while test screening this movie. Several original scenes were edited out after test screening this movie, including an alternative ending which is all shown to the DVD viewer.
The DVD version of “Final Destination” also has other extra tidbits which the viewer might find interesting like a interactive game you can play which predicts your death.
I recommend this movie if you need for a mindless diversion from your normal movie viewing habits. This movie does contain a lot of intense violence so young viewers should not watch it.
Hold on…I feel a dream-like premonition coming on as I end this review. Wait, it’s a little fuzzy…now its getting clearer…I see it now…I see a couple of “Final Destination” sequels coming to the movie screens in the next year or so. Oh my, I think I developed ESP after watching this DVD (smile).
The thriller begins with Alex Browning (Devon Sawa) embarking on a trip to Paris with his high school French class. As the class boards the airplane a...More at Buy.com Marketplaces
