HBO decided to try something a little different when they decided to air their new show called Sex and The City back in the Summer of 1998. The show started out as the story of one Carrie Bradshaw, who writes a column in a New York newspaper called Sex and The City. This column, as she describes it, gives in-sight to Manhattanites on the state of sexual affairs in the city, and basically serves as a teacher to readers going through the rigorous dating scene of New York. She also serves as the narrator for much of the first season, explaining things as they progress, and giving further deductive reasoning's about why people do the things that they do. As the season starts to unfold, more screen time is given to her three best friends. Those friends are Charlotte (who is the typical nice girl), Miranda (a lawyer with an edge), and Samantha (a very sexually active woman who loves to party).
Sex and The City was really unlike anything else out there when it hit the screen, and some audiences didn't really expect what they were presented. It did catch on pretty quickly though, and through its core audience was able to not only prolong the life of the series for 6 seasons, but additionally started many fashion trends as people wanted to be or dress like the main characters of the show. Showing how four completely different women could confront the dating scene of a major metropolitan city was innovative in its approach, and it showed just how hard it is for career oriented women to find success and love in such a harsh environment. To be short, women were finally given the time to shine as sexually active television characters that didn't hold back when it came to having fun.
Sarah Jessica Parker stars as Carries Bradshaw, who has constantly had problems finding Mr. Right, and serves as the main focus of most of the first seasons 12 episodes. Her friends are played by Kim Cattrall (Samantha Jones), Kristin Davis (Charlotte York), and Cynthia Nixon (Miranda Hobbes), who are all presented with their own quirks as well as interesting hobbies. None of the stars involved had reached the fame that they ended up receiving from this show, with Jessica Parker Cattrall playing supporting roles in films, and Davis hot off her television show Melrose Place, their fame was about to take a rocket into the sky. Each of the actresses brings an interesting flavor to the show, and we get to see how each of them are dealing with being single in their 30's. Almost every episode, there is a sort-of round table when they meet for brunch or lunch and discuss their daily discord, plus it serves as a way for the audience to catch up with each character.
Now Sex and The City could be described as a story about four shallow women in New York, but some of that is used for humor, and also used to humanize their characters. Each lead has many redeeming qualities, and three of the four always seem to have the best intentions in their relationships, even though they have found themselves quite unlucky at times. The season 1 DVD set gives you a first look into this world, and presents the original 12 episodes on 2 discs. Each one seems pretty short and succinct since there are no commercials, and if you are watching it for the first time, it will be hard not to watch several episodes at a time. The writing was a little off-the-wall at times, some of the episodes seemed like filler, and there were some odd moments, but on the whole the originality of this show won out in the end. If you are looking for an interesting show about the struggles of 4 single women to find love in New York (with a lot of comedy and sex thrown in) this could be a really appealing show.
