Story
28 Days follows Gwen Cummings as she struggles to overcome her addictions. She's a young successful writer by day and a troublesome party girl by night. Her steady boyfriend Jasper, who's also suffering from his own alcohol addiction, only increases her digression into the pit of alcoholism by encouraging her and making excuses to and for her.
At her sister's wedding, Gwen gets drunk, makes a fool of herself, falls on the wedding cake and steals the limo. If that wasn't bad enough, she crashes the limo into a home not far from the reception and earns herself a court-ordered stay at rehab.
She is repulsed by the summer-camp atmosphere of the rehab and begins to find ways to get herself in trouble and faces expulsion from the program when she finally realizes that she needs to be there and commits herself to the program. While in rehab she is forced to associate with an unusual cast of characters, who eventually find themselves very close to her heart. She also goes through a lot of self evaluation and relives memories from her troubled childhood as the daughter of an alcoholic single mom.
My Thoughts
First of all, I love Sandra Bullock for her portrayal of whimsical characters, at first I had doubts that she could pull off such a deeply involved character. But, to my delight and astonishment, she was perfect for the role. Now, I couldn't imagine anyone else playing Gwen.
The supporting cast was incredible. While you didn't get into their individual stories, they all had very strong personalities and character traits. I believe that Alan Tudyk as Gerhardt, the gay-German addict, was my favorite.
The story starts out quite simple, but as Bullock's character develops and grows, so does the story. I think that it was well thought out and shows a positive encouraging side of rehab.
