Was 28 Days better than 'Where the Heart Is?' Yes and no. Let me say that it was different...not as sappy as I expected, which turns out to be a good thing. I also need to note that this night has been a great break for me... Need a stress relief? Rent three really great movies. My only sad point is that I didn't get a single trick-or-treater at my door!!
What is living?
Is it the constant parties, the continual high? Or is it the wish to fit in somewhere and not knowing how?
This movie is a look at life in a rehabilitation program that Sandra Bullock's character Gwen, faces after ruining her sister's wedding reception and then running the limo through the front of a house.
Not having been through any rehabilitation programs, I can't vouch for how close to home it hits reality-wise. But then again, having not ever been in the situation it made me not ever want to be, so the writers must have done something right.
I think one of their biggest challenges, as well as Sandra's, was where to balance the reality with the humor so as to make the audience *not* want to find a tall building to jump off of in despair. This was accomplished nicely by adding in strange co-rehabilitees who find themselves in some odd but funny situations.
What is learning?
Is it about getting rid of the addiction or is it deeper? What was the catalyst for the addiction in the first place?
This is not only covered for Gwen, as she deals with issues of her mother's addictions but also with other residents of the program... how does it affect the child of the mother who was never there? What does it do to the career of the professional baseball player or a doctor?
What does it take to stay clean? Is it more than breaking the habit? Does it take seeing your roommate overdose? Or participants leave the program only to return?
What is being free?
Is it free from the toxins of the drugs and alcohol? Or free from the demons that come with using an external influence to deal with them?
Does it come from understanding who you are or better yet why you are?

I could write this review and tell you that "girl is wild and addicted to drugs and alcohol, girl gets arrested for said drugs and alcohol related problems, girl gets rehab instead of prison, girl gets better, gets happy and is all fixed, girl gets out... dumps bad influence boyfriend... lives happily ever after....." because that is the movie in a nutshell.
But that doesn't do the movie credit. It really gets into the deeper meanings of how one addict got to where she was and how she started to get out of it. And it does it without being overly morose and most often in a light hearted way. No tall buildings necessary.
