Some TV spots highlight one review for Frequency as a combination of Field of Dreams, Back to the Future and The Sixth Sense.
Now, I love all three of these movies.. And yes, Frequency does have the baseball / change-the-future / startle-you-at-the-right-time mixture. But I think that the reviewers who dared share Frequency with these movies is praising it just way too much.
I'm not quite sure why I didn't come out satisfied. Perhaps it is because Frequency tries, but fails, to be a thriller, science fiction film and drama, all in one perfect package. One minute I'm trying to establish a calm pace as father and son communicate across time, and the next I'm detached as we quickly see father play private investigator to stop a murderer from killing nurses. Perhaps with some slower pacing (something I like in films, forgive me) I would be able to sympathize with father, son, the murdered and everyone else.
If you really enjoy "feel good" movies, you'll enjoy this. It certainly a fantastical, whimsical film. But I don't think it shares the same pedestal (in terms of drama) as my favorite film: Field of Dreams.
