First of all, I'd like to say that if you have any personal theories concerning time travel, do NOT see this movie. Unless of course you feel like paying seven dollars for a headache. Now, I don't want you to think everything about the movie is terrible, but the handling of the whole time/space issue certainly was. If you can get past this confused, muddled aspect of Frequency then you might like this movie..maybe.
There are some touching moments concerning the father (who died when his son was very young) and his adult son speaking to him from the future using their "magical radio" which seems to be able to let past and future communicate using the power of the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights. Sound sort of silly? It is. To make a long story short, the son and father communicate back and forth until basically everything works out good for the both of them. In terms of the son letting the father know what will happen in the future, thereby averting the many disasters that come the family's way. By the end of the movie you're left with a sappy, generic story where everything turns out great for the characters, and all because of an outrageously contradicting set of events.
Normally when a movie or other form of story tries to tackle the enormously confusing issue of time and the changing of past events to affect the future, certain rules are laid down, in order to make up for the loopholes concerning the subject. Not in this movie. Caution is thrown to the wind as Frequency dives right into the whole past and future topic , using it as a crutch to support the happy-go-lucky story. Meanwhile, the audience is left wondering if the last thing that happened would be possible, and how much the movie hasn't backed up any of the events so far, and probably won't start anytime soon.
So, in closing, if you have a simple, take things as they are frame of mind, you may like this movie. However, those of us who have the habit of thinking too hard will find the film at best annoyingly pleasant. A riveting story of two people who, faced with a not so good future, take control of the past and wield the power of time using a radio and a natural phenomenon in order to make things good for their family while not upsetting the fragile balance of time and space too much. Got it? Me neither.
