bilbopooh's Full Review: VeggieTales - King George and the Ducky
I received this latest Veggie Tales video for Easter, and it did not disappoint. First of all, it's a NEW video. That, in itself, is a thrill. Even the previews are new; we get a sneak preview of Big Idea's latest undertaking: 3-2-1 Penguins. It concerns four eclectic penguins who spend their days in orbit. And they have hands! Also included is an assurance that this new show does not mean the end of Veggie Tales; the next episode is based on the story of Esther and will be coming out next year.
But now, the story. This video begins not with the traditional Bob and Larry on the counter, but with Jimmy and Jerry Gourd...dressed to look like Bob and Larry. They are determined to do the show themselves, and they bumble their way through a phony letter before the real duo steps in to stop them. But the gourds insist that they have a story prepared to teach selfishness, so the tomato and the cucumber let them go ahead.
The result? "The Englishman who Went up the Hill and Came Down with All the Bananas." Wow! What a title! With a crayonish background and several veggie folk throwing out comments from the sidelines, Archie comes down with all the bananas from the top of the hill. However, he won't eat them because he doesn't have any strawberries. Then a Swedish gourd comes down another hill with all the strawberries and won't eat them because he has no bananas. Archie and the Swede see each other, but each refuses to give up one of his tasty morsels.
After the gourds' rather flat film, they try to close the show but Bob stops them, saying that they were way to short and did everything wrong. Enter Bob and Larry to tell the tale of King George and the Ducky, a much kinder, gentler version of the story of David and Bathsheba. King George loves his rubber ducky more than anything in the world, and his greatest delight is in his bubble baths. He pays no attention to the great pie war which is wrenching his kingdom apart. And then George spies Junior Asparagas in the tub with his ducky. Suddenly, that is the most beautiful ducky in the world and he must have it.
Four memorable songs enhance the tale of George's desire for the ducky that leads him to send the innocent Junior to the front lines. One of these is done on <ooooohhhhh!> flannelgraph! Pa Grape plays the wise man who brings the king to his senses with a story. The silly song is a little odd, featuring Larry watching a soap opera about Barbara Manatee and her boyfriend Bill. The troubles which threaten to keep them apart devastate Larry, and he tangoes around the room with his stuffed manatee, promising Barbara that he will take care of her.
This video is perhaps not the best video in the collection, but neither is it the worst. (Though even the worst video in the collection is nowhere near bad.) I would highly recommend this movie to any Veggie Tales fan, though I think that if you're just getting introduced to Veggie Tales your best bet is Are You My Neighbor? or Where's God When I'm Sca-a-ared?
