Sorry you didn't enjoy the movie more.
With the X-Men, they were just born with the abilities they had. I don't know if there was ever any sort of explanation for why there were so many different powers.

I just saw it for the first time. Initially, it was interesting, but it kind of fell apart for me. I guess that I had problems with all of the different mutations, because it didn't make any sense to me. The mutants have every sort of superpower and weird ability, but it's never explained. If evolution is the explanation, then why the odd variety of mutated abilities? The abilities seemed to be tagged on just for the use of SPFX. Hugh Jackman's appeal also escapes me. In addition, the uneven use of the powers befuddled me as well. For instance, one scene Storm is being choked to death, then later she makes a big storm and beats up the bad guys. Huh?
I didn't have any emotional involvement or investment with any of the characters. I didn't hate it, but it just seemed like dumb eye candy.

I only read maybe 2 of the comics, but I had seen the cartoon and liked that, so I'm sure that helped this be a more enjoyable movie for me.

I hadn't read the comic book and didn't really enjoy the movie as much as I would have had I been a fan. Never have gotten into comic books. More of a bookworm! :-)
