Nicolas Cage's action movies are usually riddled with musings on humanity, mortality, and other existential themes. Although he's good at this, sometimes you wish he would just chill out and kiss Angelina Jolie. And that's what he does! Gone in 60 Seconds is a great film because it's fun. I'll admit, it's unintelligent, but it's not trying to be anything else-so you don't mind.
Nicolas Cage is a retired car thief who has to go back into the game one last time to save his brother (Giovanni Ribisi) who goofed up on a recent "boost" for this new criminal boss who is supposed to be scary even though he's skinny and effeminate, but just ends up appearing skinny and effeminate. He has three days to steal fifty cars, and Angelina Jolie in dreadlocks to help him.
Nicolas Cage gives a restrained performance, which allows all of his supporting cast to truly shine. There are some great wise-cracking younger car thieves who help Cage with the task, and Angelina Jolie who doesn't say very much, but keeps wearing those dreads and wetting her lips, so we forgive her because if she just sat in front of a camera and curled her lips for 90 minutes, I know I would watch it...twice. Giovanni Ribisi as his little brother is the true highlight of the film. He gives an extraordinary performance. He's charasmatic and funny and the closest the film gets to adding a bit of humanity to the plot.
Overall, the film is fun, edgy, and ends with a car chase that you can't help but watch the end of and go "Whoa!" I won't tell you what makes you uncontrollably say that as you watch it, but for that alone, it's worth seeing this movie on the big screen...along with Angelina Jolie's lips that is.
