It seems everytime I watch my girlfriend's 7 year old daughter, it is time to review a kid's movie. Fortunately, I love cartoons and just about any type of comedy. In spite of this, Chicken Run was a really long dull movie in my opinion.
Chicken Run is a British animated film about a group of chickens imprisoned by their evil farm owners and their furious and continuous attempts to escape.
ANIMATION:
This may be my first problem, but I am not a fan of Claymation or whatever you wish to call this type of film. I grew up with "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer", and everything else pales in comparison. Bugged out Chicken eyes just don't thrill me as the high point of special effects. I've always thought that since "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", animation has been getting more and more spectacular, and maybe my expectations were too high, because Chicken Run was certainly disappointing to me.
PLOT:
I don't like to be able to describe a kid's movie in one word, if the word is "poignant" I loved "On Golden Pond", but I wouldn't show it in the background at a 7 year old's birthday party. While Chicken Run certainly wasn't overly sappy (in fact, it may have handled situations in too mature a manner), it just wasn't what I was hoping for.
MISCELLANEOUS:
Like many British films, some of the humor is lost in translation. (By the way, "Bean" is the only film I ever walked out of, but I love "Monty Python", so I don't have a complete anti-British bias) With a dearth of sight gags, dialogue needs to help out, and that was difficult enough for me, and near impossible for kids.
In conclusion, if I want to see a well acted drama, I want to see human beings. If I want to see a cartoon, I want to laugh out loud. Chicken Run misses for me (and the child I took to see it) on both counts.
