What a strange little film and yet it's almost totally enjoyable. The acting is superb and the story line, while not at all believable, definitely shows creativity.(NOTE: I use WebTV and cannot paragraph so I use dots.).........................................................................................................................Trixie, very aptly played by Emily Watson, is a passionate gum chewing, cliche speaking undercover agent who knows how to chew gum, but cannot get one cliche right. She bombards you with one after another and every time there is something topsy-turvy in her choice of words. For example...while talking to her friend Lance (Nathan Lane) Trixie saysl."If you're not careful you'll drink yourself to Bolivia." Another time she says.."You're a parasite for sore eyes."...and "How does she learn to sing Acapulco?" There are so many, so fast, it's almost mind boggling. I found myself laughing most of the time, but at other times I wanted to shake Trixie and say...Get it right for Heavens sake. It was almost painful at times. ..........................................................................................................................It seems Trixie left school in the 5th grade to care for her ailing mother. She is apparently self-taught, but not too well. Trixie, at times, seemed border-line mentally challenged and yet here she is a detective. I can't figure out how she passed the exam. Guess I should remember it's only a movie. Emily Watson is magnificent in the role, quite a stretch from her roles in Angela's Ashes and Hillary and Jackie. .........................................................................................................................Hunky Dermot Mulroney plays a somewhat shady character who is attracted to Trixie and vice-versa. He works for Red (Will Patton) an even more shady land developer. Nick Nolte plays a questionable senator (will wonders never cease) and this is probably one of his greatest roles. Leslie Anne Warren plays a floozy singer named Dawn. The cast is great. I especially liked Nathan Lane's lounge performer character. It gave him a chance to show off his versatility...........................................................................................................................The plot thickens as Trixie gets involved with Dex and ends up on a boat owned by Red and frequented by the Senator and Dawn. A murder follows and Trixie goes about trying to solve it. She is convinced the guilty culprit is the Senator and contrives a unique way of setting him up. Nick Nolte's ramblings after the set-up are priceless...........................................................................................................................If you like "off-beat" films, you'll love Trixie. But see it quick. It's one of those films that doesn't stay in the theaters long.
