Hitchcock Style Thriller

Written: Jul 23 '01
  • User Rating: Excellent
  • Suspense:
Pros:Michelle Pfiffer, Harrison Ford, suspenseful movie
Cons:Is a little slow in the beginning
The Bottom Line: This is the best thriller I have seen in a long time. It is definitely worth seeing.

Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.

Michelle Pfiffer and Harrison Ford play Claire and Norman, a happily married couple. They live in a huge beautiful house in Vermont. Claire used to be a musician with an orchestra, but she gave that up years ago when she married Norman. He is a professor working on scientific research at the local college.

When the movie begins, Claire's daughter from her first marriage is going off to college. Claire and Norman had no children together, so Claire is left with an empty house and she misses her daughter terribly. Claire is spending the days and some evenings alone because Norman is busy working on his research. They have new neighbors who fight a lot. Claire spies on them at times. She becomes convinced that Mary - the wife - has been murdered by her husband after something she sees late one night. Claire becomes convinced that Mary's spirit is haunting the house when strange things start happening. The front door opens by itself. The stereo turns itself on. The bathtub fills up with water by itself. Writing appears on the steam in the bathroom mirror. Claire sees a blond woman in the mirror. Norman thinks Claire is having some sort of breakdown and send her to a therapist. He is not understanding about what Claire is going through. Claire continues to look for answers for what is happening. She uncovers some shocking revelations.

I'm not going to say any more about the plot because I don't want to spoil it for anyone who has not seen it yet. There was a little more reveled about the movie in some of the previews, but in case someone has missed those particular previews, I'm not saying anymore.

I was surprised and shocked by events that led to the end of the moving. I never suspected what was going to happen. This movie kept me guessing. Some people may have found this movie to be predictable. I didn't. That doesn't mean I didn't think the ending made sense because it does. I just didn't see it coming. There is one or two things that are clues to what will happen at the end of the movie, but I didn't catch them at first. I did notice when these things happened, I just didn't think they were significant events.

I own the DVD of this movie. Mine is in widescreen format. I think that this movie was only done in this format on DVD, but I'm not sure. The DVD includes interviews with the cast and director. They talk about how the movie was made. I found this to be very interesting. There was a documentary on all the movies of Robert Zemeckis - sorry I can't remember how to spell his name. If you rent this DVD and haven't seen the movie before, I would recommend you watch the movie before you watch the stuff on how the movie was made. It does talk about a few things later in the movie that could spoil the ending for you if you haven't seen it before.

This is a suspenseful thriller that reminds me of Hitchcock movies. The suspense builds and builds until the end of the movie. The music that is used adds to the suspense. This movie manages to be scary without a lot of gore and violence.

I have seen this movie several times now and I still find it to be very suspenseful. Especially a certain scene near the end of the movie. Anyone who has seen the movie will know which one I mean. This is one of my favorite movies.
