Judging by other reviews of this movie I have read, this is obviously a movie that you either love, or dislike. Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie.
I have always enjoyed scary movies, and I am always on the look out for a movie that leaves my heart pounding after the movie has finished. If the plot is relatively okay, the acting is good, and a few scenes make me jump, I'll usually give it a thumbs up. I felt this movie had all of the above. The plot, albeit twisted and a tad unbelievable, was interesting, the acting was excellent - particularly Michelle Pfeiffer, and more than a few scenes made me jump.
What Lies Beneath is a bit slow at the beginning. There is a lot of background given, but it all comes together near the end of the film. The plot seems to move quite slowly, and appears to be very standard - Harrison Ford plays a workaholic husband and Pfeiffer a dedicated wife whose only daughter has just moved to college. Claire (Pfeiffer) grows lonely, and seeming unstable when she starts hearing and seeing things the house. Norman (Ford) is very distant, and obviously concerned about his wife. The twist is, you won't guess the ending until right before.
What I feel makes this movie are the sound effects and camera work. Both are utilized to make your heart race and keep your eyes glued to the screen. I have never been part of such a quiet audience, and the sound effects and use of sound kept the theatre holding their breath and clutching their hands.
This movie is let down by some typical "scary movie" plot turns, but it's usually to be expected. It's never over until the killer appears to have been killed at least 3 times.
What Lies Beneath is well worth watching on the big-screen with surround sound. Watching this movie at home would take away what the movie makers have succeeded in doing with sounds and camera work. See this one before it's released on video. I'm sure you'll join the rest of the audience in screaming at least once.
