I really enjoyed Jason Biggs' last film, American Pie, so I decided to check this film out. I didn't have very high expectations for it, because I knew exactly how it was going to turn out from the previews. The trailer for this film basically summed up the whole movie.
A Brief Summary Of the Plot and Some Criticism
Jason Biggs plays 'Paul'. He is a dorky, somewhat naive kid from a small town who gets accepted into a college in New York City. No one likes him at his new college, because he doesn't seem to fit in with everyone else. So far, this plot sounds like a complete cliche, but, wait, I am not done yet, there is more unoriginality.
Paul falls in love with a girl named Dora. Dora is basically the only one nice to him at the college, and she is the (gasp!) complete opposite of him (wow, I bet you didn't see that one coming, heh).
The only problem is that Dora is having a secret affair with their English teacher. It isn't a great relationship, and you know what the outcome of their relationship will be within the first half hour of the movie.
You can probably guess what happens in the ending, I don't really have to tell you, but I will anyway; Dora comes to her senses and realizes that Paul is a great guy, and she is making a big mistake dating the English teacher. He becomes slightly "cooler," and all the antagonists of the story get what they deserve.
My Opinion
What a cliche of a movie!! Loser is the classic "when opposites attract" sappy, teen love flick. This movie was on the boring side also, because it had no surprises nor a climax. As I said in my title, you only have to see the trailer, because it reveals almost everything about the movie, barely leaving anything out. The ending was a little rushed too.
Oh, and remember all those little clips of the movie in the preview, like the one of him tripping down the stairs of the classroom, the scene where Paul's roommate says "Hey, nice hat. Did the directors of Fargo have a garage sale?", and the one where Paul says "Can you turn in down a skoach?"
Well, all of those scenes happened within the first twenty minutes of the movie. I am sure that is what attracted a lot of people to see this movie, but it's no surprise nor is it entertaining if all those "funny" scenes happen so early on in the movie. With most movie trailers, that is not the case.
I recommend you see this movie if you aren't sick of all of those teen love films, or if you just want to kill time. Don't get me wrong, this isn't really a horrible movie, it is just one that is unoriginal and boring. It would mostly attract the age group of 12-20. If you liked this film, check out ALMOST EVERY SINGLE TEEN LOVE MOVIE.
