Ulfson's Full Review: Amazing Nurse Nanako Vol. 2: Firecrackers
Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
In this, the second of three volumes, something that vaguely resembles a plot finally manages to peek it's head through the weirdness that you watched on the first disc. New characters are starting to emerge out of nowhere and there is even a tiny bit of background story though it's almost as confusing as the present story is.
First off, there is the wonderful assistant Satsuki who, in my not so humble opinion, is the only truly entertaining character in the whole series. From what I was able to gather she is an assistant who helps with the mental aspects of Dr. Ogami's work. Then there are the others who live in the house such as Genki who appears to be a very large russian monk (think Zangeif from Street Fighter in more clothing) and the others whom I refuse to speak about because not only was I unable to figure out where they came from but I've also been unable to figure out what their purpose in the house even is.
I think that's one of the biggest issues with this series is that they tried to squeeze too much into it. There are too many characters, too much needless drama, too much whining, too much backstory and too many plot holes. I know that I defended this series in my last review but I'm not so sure that I can do that as much this time around. I still enjoyed watching this disc (even though one has to wonder just how rich this Dr. Ogami is with how many times his house gets demolished in just about every episode) and I will be watching the final disc just so that I can see if the writers were able to patch up each and every little plot hole they made. If they can figure out how to do that then they are far better writers than I can ever hope to be.
The back story that they are hinting at though keeps me intrigued. They keep hinting at secret experiments that went on during the Doctor's childhood that involves Nanako and while they never get specific, they keep eluding to this so one can only hope that it is not forgotten and they remember to turn it into a major plot line. Unlike all the major villians from Disc 1 which all seem to have vanished into thin air.
All in all, I have to say that this series is probably much too confusing for the casual anime watcher. If you love your anime, you'll want to see this series just so that you can say that you saw it and can discuss it with others if it ever comes up... or you can rent it if you have an afternoon to kill. Other than that, I can't think of any real reasons why anyone would want to watch this series.
