Remember the Titans?
I must admit, I didn't want to see this movie. I am in no way, shape, or form, a football fan. This movie was hardly about football, it was about racism that I didn't even know existed. Maybe I'm blind, but I don't see racism like this out there. I've been out of high school for four years. There was nothing like this... A restaurant owner refused service to a group that contained two black guys, the whole entire town was rude to their faces. Mothers even picketed to keep them out of the school. What? Either I'm living in a vacuum, or this movie was blown out of proportion. Okay, the movie was supposed to be set in the seventies, but they had a lot of current sayings, such as "Who's your Daddy?" Please, everyone out there that remembers the seventies, did you EVER hear or say "Who's your daddy?" (except if being reprimanded by your actual father?) Remember the Titans? Well, I sure will remember that their local color was a bit off. Have you ever seen your high school football team break out in song and dance? (Psst: Remember the Titans, it might not happen again.)
When Sunshine kissed one of the main characters, I kept expecting them to clarify what that was about. Not once did they give a hint as to if he was gay, joking, or trying to psyche out his teammate. I must say, for a high school football jock to kiss another guy, it can't be just joking! But anyway, it added a little bit of memory to the Titans. So, when I think of "Remember the Titans" I will inevitably think back to this cute little blond guy in a football uniform, kissing the quarterback full, on the lips. (I'm actually not sure if it was the quarterback, this movie doesn't help out people that don't know anything about football.)
I think the last words "We will always, always remember the Titans..." could have been better thought out. Think about it this way: Do you remember high school? Did you play a sport? Are you ever going to forget? Probably not. Okay. Why am I being so harsh? I've heard such great things about this movie. My parents wanted to see it, everyone at my boyfriend's work wanted to see it, it seemed that I was the only person who didn't really care. I did like that it was about a high school group of people. And I did like that it showed what some African Americans go through, because I hadn't thought of it from anyone else's point of view. I guess something good came out of this movie, I feel a bit more well-rounded.
How was the acting?
The actors were quite good, Denzel was the main character, and he's amazingly talented. Gary, one of the main characters of the football team, constantly looked as if he had just sucked on a lemon. His face was always distorted and wrinkled. (Remember the Titans? Oh, I remember that movie. It has that guy in it that always has his face squished up!)
Will I watch it again?
Maybe in a few years. This is not the kind of movie you can watch every weekend because it's your favorite. I guess this movie appeals to people who can remember times that the racial discrimination happened so harshly.
A couple side notes about the movie:
We rented this movie on DVD. As you may know from previous reviews, I like to list some of the better features on the DVD itself. This one didn't really have any great and amazing features. Under Bonus Material they had a section called "Denzel becomes Boone"... At first I thought it really should have been under scene selections because it seemed like just a long scene clipping, but it turned out to have nothing to do with the commentary that followed. As mentioned on the back cover, this is based on a true story. Denzel actually got to meet the real Coach Boone, and they showed behind the scenes footage of the filming, and thoughts from the actor and coach. FYI: The car in the movie was similar to the car Coach Boone still drives.
Final Thoughts:
As everyone in life must learn through there mistakes, you should go rent this movie. It may not live up to the reputation, but it's the kind of movie you have to see for yourself.
And remember, Always ALWAYS Remember the Titans. (And maybe they will make a sequel where they mention why Sunshine kissed his friend!)
-- Got to go! I just remembered the movie was due. I'm sure glad I Remember the Titans. (How cheesy was that?)
