What does "The Joe Review" mean? 2 things: 1. I'm extremely pompous and actually believe that something named after me means something :). 2. If you read a Joe Review you will be reading a review that doesn't repeat the same things the other 10 to 30 reviewers have already said. You're just going to find out whether or not I liked it and why or why not.
I didn't like this movie personally. There were a few really funny spots but overall I personally just don't enjoy watching somebody have one of the worst weekends of his life, even if I try to suspend reality and say "it's just a movie".
I would call this movie a combination of "There's Something About Mary" and "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" for those of you who remember that Steve Martin and John Candy "farce" (at least as I called it). As the previews suggest a guy goes to meet his girlfriend's parents and a bunch of weird and funny things happen. The movie starts out really slowly and painfully, the first 20 to 30 minutes, nothing really funny happens, it's more just embarrassing, i.e. to get out of being exposed as a liar Ben Stiller's character pretends that he used to milk cats, the family plays water volleyball and they all get to insulting him because he's not as good as everyone else, so he finally spikes one and damages something important (sorry for blowing one plot point), he takes the wrong suitcase and when the father opens it it's full of stuff that "makes him wonder", and later there's an embarrassing incident with a cat.
But the second half of the movie is pretty funny. I can't really say anything about it without blowing it, but if you can survive the first half of this movie you will be rewarded by some original stuff that will make you laugh.
