Ben Stiller Shines
Written: Jan 27 '02 (Updated Jan 27 '02)
Pros:Great humor. Not too gross and crude.
Cons:Some scenes were unbearably hard to watch because I felt so bad for Ben Stiller.
The Bottom Line: If you like comedy, good acting, good direction, and a great story, you'll absolutely fall in love with Meet the Parents.
Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
"You a pot-head Focker?"
Sorry, I just had to do it. It's one of the funniest movie lines to me. When Robert De Niro said that to Ben Stiller, I was on the ground, laughing my butt off. I loved this movie actually. I thought the humor value was a 10. I've never had so many consecutive laughing moments. Anyway, here's the full review:
Synopsis
Gaylord "Greg" Focker (Ben Stiller) loves his girlfriend Pam (Teri Polo). So he decides to escort her to her house to meet her parents and to go to her sister's wedding. Greg is met by some hardships when he starts to realize that his life is under close examination by Pam's hard-to-please father, Jack Byrnes (Robert De Niro). In the duration of this trip, many things get trashed, and among those things, is the relationship Greg has with Pam's parents, and the rest of Pam's family. Greg tries to mend all the rips and tears in the fabric of the relationship with her parents, but is it even possible?
Storyline
The idea for this was great. I mean it's such a common occurrence to meet your girlfriend's/boyfriend's parents, but who would of thought this many things could have gone wrong? Director Jay Roach (Austin Powers, Mystery Alaska) has done a phenomenal job at balancing the humor and realism of the process of "meeting the parents." The sequences are so funny, and the way they all tie together is even better. Every scene has hilarious consequences. Just the way the movie was made is exceptional.
Characters
The blend of the direction, story, and the acting made this movie a success, but I really think that the actors are responsible for this movie's success. Ben Stiller is a great comedian. He did a great job at playing the nice, sarcastic, funny, over reacting boyfriend. The chemistry between Stiller and De Niro was incredible to watch. Robert De Niro's tough guy image really made this movie a sure thing. Just the intimidation that De Niro imposes on Stiller is superb. Teri Polo does a great job at playing the loving, sympathetic girlfriend of Stiller's. She did a great job for her real big screen debut. Let's not forget the supporting roles either. Owen Wilson never fails to astonish me with his fresh blend of comedy, and silliness. Wilson was definitely great in this as the ex-boyfriend of Polo's. The scene at Kevin's (Owen Wilson) house was nothing short of brilliant. The way everything went down in that scene was classic.
Compare/Contrast
This movie was great. I can't judge if it was better than Austin Powers or not because they are 2 different movies, each hilarious in their own ways. Although I can't judge, I can tell you that if you liked Austin Powers you'll love Meet the Parents and vise-versa. The reason I add that is because Jay Roach is a tremendous comedy director. All of his movies were favorites of mine. Meet the Parents is not your average stupid comedy, it's really a smart and clever movie although silly and stupid at times. I loved the blend.
Recommendations
This movie is great for mostly all people. Kids might not understand the value of this humor, but they'll probably get a few good laughs. If you liked The Royal Tenenbaums, There's Something About Mary, or Keeping the Faith, you'll probably love Meet the Parents. But, if you are some big fan of teen-humor like American Pie or Road Trip, I really don't know if you'll enjoy this. If you have a good sense of humor, you'll be delighted with Meet the Parents.
This movie was a gem. There were numerous funny lines, scenes, and sequences, and everything was great. The directing, acting, storyline, they were all top notch. If you like comedy, you'll love Meet the Parents. I laughed for the majority of the movie, and I think it might be my favorite comedy of all time.
