Last night, my fiancee and I struggled to make the decision as to which movie we wanted to see more, Lost Souls or The Exorcist. Well I guess the choice we made was obvious since you are reading this and let me be honest with you when I suggest to wait for the video if you really want to see this one.
This is one of those movies that keeps you talking under your breath on the way out of the theater, all the way home.
I will now spare you 45 minutes of time and tell you right now what the plot of the movie is.
Winona Ryder, plays a young woman by the name of Maya Larkin, whom in her past, was possessed and had an exorcism performed on her. They don't say it but they show a brief clip of it.
Years after the event, she is visited by one of the priests that helped perform the exorcism. Of course, at the time we are introduced to the priest, we have no idea about any of this other that the sheer fear in her face when she first spots him watching her from the otherside of a fence as she plays with the children in her class.
From there, she has been brought, by the priest, to a man who had murdered his family and believed he was possessed. You don't see what happens in the room, but you do know that there is an exorcism taking place. ( trust me, not hard to figure out )
When the door is busted open, Winona grabs papers, and the taped session and takes it with her. All of a sudden, back at her house she is going through numbers, figuring out some kind of code, numbers that the killer had been writing repeatedly which ended up standing for letters in the alphabet.
That first part wasn't too bad, I have to say it did have my curiosity going wondering what all of these numbers meant. But after all of that, it really does take about another 30 minutes before the plot is revealed. Satan is about to take his reign in human form, by being rebourne into a writer by the name of Peter Kelson, a man who does not believe in God or the Devil. This transformation, is to take place on his 33rd birthday, at the exact time of his birth and the plan is to make him understand that he is the chosen one, and to try and stop it from happening.
Well, when the plot finally kicked in, we sat there and thought, " Now this should be getting good. " Well we thought wrong. I do not want to tell you everything about this movie but I wanted to give you and idea of what it was about, incase you decide that you still want to see this on the big screen.
When they advertise, " YOU HAD THE EXORCIST, WE HAVE THE LOST SOULS ", do not be under the impression that it is like the exorcist. Although an exorsism takes place, it is not even remotely close to the movie.
What is the most disappointing thing about this movie is that it had great potential to be a freaky movie with the storyline, but it felt as if they did not take the time to put into it, what would make it a great movie, especially the ending. When the movie ended, everyone in the theater was just sitting there waiting for the next scene when the credits began to roll. It wasn't even one of those endings that kept you wanting more, it was more like one of those endings where you sat there wondering where the ending was.
Apparently, this movie was actually made 2 years ago, from what I read, and was just released. They should have used those 2 years of limbo to watch it over and over again and understand that the movie needed alot more than what they put into it.
I love Winona Ryder and was disappointed that she chose to be in a film with little substance.
One thing I did find interesting in the movie is the way they chose to actually film the scenes with the lighting and the camera angles they used did add to it. And one more thing, I have to admit that we did jump quite high at 2 points of the movie but we later figured it was the excellent and LOUD surround sound effects in the movie. The music and sound effects were very good in this movie.
I personally was very disappointed with this movie and feel that if you want to see the movie, you already did in the previews. I just wish someone could make a movie these days with the same kind of the FREAK FACTOR as the EXORCIST provided. Still keeping my fingers crossed!
