The Little Vampire - The Search for Mortality?
Written: Jun 4, 2001
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
I just finished watching this movie with my family and we all found it highly entertaining. The Little Vampire is differently a different viewpoint on the lives of vampires.
==================================
The Story
==================================
A young boy who has just moved to Scottland winds up befriending a young vampire. Actually he is over 300 years old, but still has the body of a 9 year old.
Tony Thompson has been having dreams regularly of vampires and a certain ritual that occurs only with a specific comet comes toward Earth. The ritual includes a pendant with a red stone in the middle. The vampires intend on using this ritualistic stone to gain their mortality again.
However, as with any vampire story, there is a vampire hunter, Rookery. He has another purpose for the stone. Using it with a different ritual, he can send the clan of vampires right to hell.
However, Tony and his vampire friend (Rudolph) join together to search for the lost stone which was last seen by the ancestors of the McAshton family. And McAshton is working with Rookery to rid the area of all vampires.
==================================
The Main Characters
==================================
Tony Thompson is played by Jonathan Lipnicki, who also played the young boy in Stuart Little. He's the one that always gets picked on at school. He's been having strange dreams of vampires and constantly talks about them. He finds Rudolph very weak and helps him to regain his strength. As the movie progresses, he is able to help Rudolphs family on several occassions.
Jonathan did a great job in this movie. His young innocence completely in awe of the things he sees with his vampire friend. My only question is, how the heck did he manage to run so many miles in such a short period of time.
Rudolph Sackville-Bagg is played by Rollo Weeks. As Tony's new friend, he discovers what it is like to be a boy in this day and age. Watching him explore the "treasure chest" that includes a Gameboy was interesting. But even though he acted like a boy at times, you could also tell that he had some maturity that came with 300 years of aging.
Rookery is played by Jim Carter. Honestly, my first impression of this guy was that he was some nutcase out of a Mad Max film. The costume was close to that. And the truck he had customized, with lights all over, wooden stake throwers and all types of equipment, it all showed just how obsessive he was.

What's This About Cows??
==================================
If you've read some of the other reviews you may have noticed some comments on the cows. This is one of the oddities that I found in the movie. I actually got hit from my husband for giggling too much. It was just too absurd!
I love my vampire movies. I think I have a fairly good education on the myths and tales of what vampires can and can't do. Although there is some debate as to how a new vampire is made, whether it is just by having a vampire bite you, or whether the blood of a vampire must be drunk first.
But when Rudolph and his family begin feeding at night on the neighboring farmers cows, they begin to act strange. First they won't come out into the light, next their eyes start shining red. But they went a little overboard when the cows took up hanging from the rafters by day and flying, with their vampire teeth showing, at night.
==================================
Overall Impression
==================================
Even with the cows, the movie was still very fun to watch. My kids loved it, my husband enjoyed, and I had quite a few giggles.
Like I said, this is not your average vampire movie. It is intended for kids, therefore you aren't going to have all the blood and gore. And I have no problem with them adding a few quirky little details just to make the movie more fun to watch.
If you are a true vampire lover, by all means watch this one. It is a cute movie. But suspend all your beliefs first, and sit back to watch a little spoof.
I think anyone could watch this movie and enjoy it!
