Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.
What do you get when you combine Matt Damon, Will Smith, and Charlize Theron into one movie? You get one great movie. Add golf to that, and it is one of the best serious movies I have seen in a long time!
The time of the movie is in the late 1920s during the depression in Savannah, Georgia. Theron plays a character whose father has recently built a golf course and then died. She takes over the golf course and tries to make it work even during the depression. Some people from the city try to buy the land from her since she is so far in debt, but she refuses. It seems that it was her father’s lifelong dream to build this golf course.
Matt Damon plays a man who was once a great golfer. He was drafted into World War I and lost his swing. He is now a drunken poker player who hasn’t picked up a golf club since before the war.
Theron decides to hold a golf match between Bobby Jones and Walter Hagan, both very popular golfers at that time. Some of the townspeople decide that they want someone from Savannah to play in this match. So, they approach Damon about it and, after some prodding, he decides to play.
This is where Smith’s character comes in. He shows up one night while Damon is hitting golf balls into a field. He comes right out of the field. Smith plays the character of a 1920’s black man very well. He has the accent and everything to a tee. Damon tells Smith that he could have been killed by one of the golf balls. Smith proceeds to tell him that he watched him hit for a minute and then decided to stand right in front of him because he felt that this was the safest place.
Smith tells Damon that he will be his caddy for $5 guaranteed. The prize money for the match is $10,000 and a caddy usually gets 10%. Smith still says he will take $5 for it. Here is where the golf comes in. The rest of the movie is based around the match and all of Bagger Vance’s tips. These tips are good for golf or life, whatever you want to apply them to.
Theron, Damon, and Smith play their parts very well. What else could you expect from a movie directed by Robert Redford? I liked everything about this movie. It was a feel good movie that is very entertaining.
I highly recommend this movie to anyone. Yes, anyone. This movie will appeal to every type of movie fan. It has all the aspects of a great movie…only time will tell. If you get a chance to rent this movie, please do. You won’t regret it.
