It wasn't until we were leaving the theater that my husband and I realized over two hours had gone by since we had entered to view the film, "The Legend of Bagger Vance". In my opinion, this is a sign that the movie was one of import. Since a long movie that has little of interest to say to me will drag. However, a movie that speaks to me will transport me into the lives of those portrayed on screen and I will not be aware of the passage of time.
I am not a fan of golf... at all. However, I am a fan of life, and this film is about life. Golf, and finding the "field" or the "perfect swing" are just the analogies used by the film to let us know that life is a game that cannot be won, just played.
I was particularly impressed with Will Smith's portrayal of Bagger Vance. I believe he should be in contention for an award for his work in this film. He portrayed a gentle soul, sharing his wisdom with Matt Damon's Junah, in subtle ways. Sometimes Junuh listened and accepted that wisdom readily, sometimes he was too caught up in his own ability to be able to listen. For me this is how we seem to live our lives, listening to the wisdom sometimes and too caught up in ourselves to listen or follow what we know in our hearts is right.
The film is light and comedic, not at all preachy.
Some characters are very stereotypical, but all in all, the film is very enjoyable, and well worth the price to go see it at the theater.
