Despite the poor of reviews, I went to see the new movie Red Planet. I’m sure you remember last years bomb, Mission To Mars. I happened to love this movie, and feel that it was very under-rated. Mission to Mars had an ending unlike I have ever seen and left my jaw dropping. Then when Red Planet was released, I really wanted to see it. I went to the movies tonight with my friends, and I witnessed a movie that made me think that the critics are bash movies that hard to believe and are about space. This movie had some of the nicest looking special effects shots and actions scenes that I have ever seen from an action movie. This movie was intelligently written, and well thought out. Don’t miss Red Planet.
Red Planet
Starring Val Kilmer, Carrie-Ann Moss, and Tom Sizemore, this movie is action packed, and it made me leave the theater satisfied.
The Story
This movie takes place in the year 2027. A team of elite astronauts fly to Mars in search for a new place to live since Earth was becoming polluted and inhabitable. They sent probes to the surface of Mars years earlier to start a garden, algae, and an atmosphere. When they landed, they were expecting to live off the vegetables that they grew in their greenhouse. When they reach the station, they find out that it way all destroyed. With oxygen in their suits run out, they were going to die, but Val Kilmer takes off his mask to breathe. He finds out that they could breathe on Mars. How is this possible? You later find out that the alga that they planted were somewhere else on Mars and was providing food for a new species of bugs. This is what gave them oxygen to breathe. I hate giving away a movie, but to explain it, I had to say that.
When I said that this movie was intelligently written and well thought out, I meant that by they gave a believable and possible reason for them to survive. To communicate to the Captain (Carrie-Ann Moss) that was orbiting Mars, they found the Mars Pathfinder that we launched in 1997 to radio back to the ship. That is what I mean by smart and well thought out.
On board the ship, you find out that a robot named Amee is along for the ride. It is programmed to scour the surface of Mars. It is fully mobile and can think for itself. Val was playing with it before they left, and you find out that there is a military mode on it that will attack any threat. From the impact of the crash, the robot’s military mode was turned on. While the crew is scouring around for a way to get home, the robot is trying to kill them. This pays off for Val because the robot actually helps Val to get home. I cant tell you how, you have to see the movie.
I would say that this movie was extremely under-rated, and if you like space or action movies, you should definitely check this one out. So how good was Red Planet? Lets see how Red Planet stacks up. Ratings are from one to five stars.
Here’s The Breakdown
Acting *****
To tell you the truth, I thought before this movie that Val Kilmer was a bit of an over actor. I didn’t think that he had good roles, and he didn’t act very well with the exception of Top Gun. In this movie, it was the opposite. Val Kilmer was a great actor in this movie and his role was great and heroic. Carrie-Ann Moss stayed on board the ship and tried to get the crew back. The action scenes that she was in were acted nicely and her lines were said with absolute beautiful acting.
From the beginning of this movie, the dialogue was perfect. I loved the way they had a narration of Carrie-Ann in the beginning and end of the movie. I have to admit that I was very surprised because for the most part, action/space movies are not exactly known for their great scripts. I believe that this script gave the actors a better performance and this movie better.
Even Mission To Mars had some major story flaws. Red Planet was flawless when it came to holes in this movie that made it unbelievable. With the oxygen from the algae, to the Mars Pathfinder radio, they figured out every crack and crevice of this story. It was just a great story that was filled with sadness, action, suspense, excitement and a little bit of a thriller mixed in.
From the shots of the spaceship, explosions on the surface, and the landing of the craft when it hit Mars soil was all done beautifully. This movie had some of the nicest explosions that I have seen. I did feel like one of the explosions could have looked a little better but that’s about it. I love the scene when the craft lands. That was cool looking, and the whole audience gasped.
This is one of the best movies of 2000. As far as space movies go, it was better than Mission To Mars and Deep Impact. I still say that besides The Matrix, Carrie-Ann Moss doesn’t get enough acting credit. She should be in more movies because she is a great actress. I know respect Val Kilmer. In this case, the critics were wrong for this movie. I give this movie a strong five stars. To anyone that wants to be taken on an action packed ride, buckle your seat beats because here comes Red Planet.
Bottom Line: This is one of the best movies of 2000.
