Boy oh boy, Hollywood sure doesn't like Mars. Has there ever been a movie made that represented the red planet in a positive way? I don't think so. Every movie I've ever seen shows it as being a true hell hole. Nothing good can happen on Mars. You would think the characters in these movies would have seen previous films, and would have known not to mess with big red. Who can forget the wonderful shot of Arnold's face mask breaking in Total Recall. It looked like he was passing a stone. Red Planet is not nearly as entertaining as Total Recall, but it is surprisingly good in a guilty(I can't believe I'm enjoying this) type of way.
Just to set the record straight. The last Mars film they made with Gary Sinise, that sucked big time. Red Planet is like Schindler's List when you compare it to that dung. So, those of you who are staying away from this film, because you still have a bad taste from that Sinise poop, don't fear.
Ok, this isn't by any means a great movie. I did like it though, it's the type of movie that will probably be more appreciated on DVD then in the theaters. There is just far too much competition out there and better films as well. It's a shame too. This movie deserves to make more money then it will and receive better reviews then it has.
I really enjoyed some of the cast in this movie. Let's start with Carrie-Anne Moss. She looks great in this film! I never knew such a run-of-the-mill woman could look so good! Oh yeah, she actually does pretty good in the acting department also.
Let's move on to Terence Stamp. This is an actor who I know is good, but he does nothing for me. In my opinion, The Limey was a really overrated film. I'm getting off track, anyway Terence is wasted. His part reminded me of Robert Forester's in Supernova. What ever thats worth.
Tom Sizemore! God, I love this guy. He doesn't really play all that interesting of a character, as a matter of fact, he plays a character that seems to be total opposite of who Tom Sizemore is. Tom Sizemore needs to have a baseball bat, and be running around running the show! Just like he did in Bringing Out The Dead.
So far I'm really trashing this movie, you are probably wondering what I liked about it. Ok, here it goes. First of all there is Val Kilmer. Now i'm not a huge fan of him, nor do I think he is a wonderful actor. He is however really interesting. More interesting then most. When ever he is on screen, you are never bored. I guess that can be said about Red Planet. It doesn't have a dull minute in it.
I also really like AMEE. That's the evil cat like robot creature that is after them. The planet also has these really ugly little bugs that run around. Oh yeah, we've also got a really bossy Mexican on the planet played by Benjamin Bratt.
In conclusion, I thought this was a good science fiction film. Give it a whirl!
