Technological progress has merely provided us with more efficient means for going backwards."
-Aldous Huxley
If a good movie around Thanksgiving time is like a Thanksgiving turkey then Arnold Schwarzenegger’s The 6th Day are the nasty kidneys and lungs that we clean out of the turkey before we eat it. Remember back 9 years ago when Arnold’s movies used to be fun? Well, since then, he has repeatedly bastardized his career over and over again, the only shining point being True Lies. 6th Day has to be one of the very low points. The action is a bunch of phooey and the humor is as funny as a stand up routine by Walter Cronkite. What the audience will laugh at is the film’s lame attempt to be intelligent and philosophical. The Terminator films were intelligent. This film is more like that kid you knew in school who told everyone he was smart until the teacher actually asked him some questions and you realized he was a fraud.
If you have seen one Schwarzenegger film you have seen them all. This one follows the same plot line. Arnold gets screwed and then gets mad. He then kills the people who got him angry and many others in the process. The film takes place in the near future where things are much different. Cars drive themselves and any doofus can have a beautiful nympho girlfriend because she is not real. She is virtual.
Arnold is Adam Gibson, a old fashioned family man who is married to Natalie (Wendy Crawson) and has one daughter. When the family dog dies, his wife wants him to clone the dog so their daughter will not be so upset about the loss. Cloning pets is a common process in this world thanks to a company called RePet. The cloning of humans is still frowned upon and illegal.
A evil tycoon named Michael Drucker (Tony Goldwyn) has a plan to make human cloning a common process. He is helped by his lead scientist (Robert Duvall). They soon clone the wrong man though. That man is Adam Gibson. Adam is shocked to arrive home on his birthday to find that he already in his house celebrating the big event.
The rest of the film has Arnold running around trying to get his life back. The funny thing I find about Arnold Schwarzenegger is that, outside of his films, he promotes anti-violence. He even says in 6th Day that he does not want to subject his daughter to violence. Ummmm... Then why in his films has he killed enough people to populate a small country?
This film wants so bad to be taken seriously yet it constantly does things to prevent this from happening. Director Roger Spottiswoode has basically made a far less superior version of Total Recall. This film also takes place in the future and it has a confused Arnold trying to get his life back. Total Recall made sense though and it contained great action along with smart wit.
Arnold better find some way of saving his career and he better do it quickly. Fans are obviously getting tired of his usual shenanigans. He’s been doing the same cr@p for so long that he himself is starting to look just as dumb as the films he chooses to do.
