Paneless's Full Review: O Brother, Where Art Thou?
While I'm not a big fan of the Coen brothers (their most recent--and popular--work, Fargo can be summed up with a line uttered by a character in that film, "Ah...I think I'm gonna puke...), the creative casting of George Clooney and the inspiration taken from Homer's The Iliad reeled me in...and kept me entertained.
The story, while immensely enjoyable, is probably the weakest link in the film, though its participants work overtime to see that it doesn't become too noticable. The terrible trio of George Clooney, John Turturro and Tim Blake Nelson (who was certifiably robbed of a Best Supporting Actor nomination as lovable lunkhead Delmar, who steals every scene he's in) are in search of a sunken treasure, with a Depression-era windfall of $400,000 per.
Along the way they encounter many a strange person and place, and the best accompaniment on their journey is the top-notch soundtrack. It simply blew me away, I have never heard music like this before, and especially not in a major motion picture.
The sights and sounds are exquisite throughout, with some pretty cinematography paints a crystal clear picture of the Depression-era South. The dirt roads and clapboard buildings illustrate with amazing clarity just what financial hardships our Soggy Bottom boys are facing without that treasure.
The only other complaint I can make is that we don't learn the fate of Delmar and Pete at the end, but then again, I don't recall Homer mentioning much about Odysseus' partners either.
