I will be honest. The first time I heard about this movie was when Marcia Gay Harding was nominated and won an Oscar for her work in this film. I have always been a fan of Jackson Pollocks work, but never knew much about his life. When I rented this movie, I thought it was going to be good, but it turned out to be excellant.
Jackson Pollock. Painter, alcoholic, artist, husband, cheater, liar, brilliant, crazy, loving, insane, needy, alive, and dead. All of these words make up who Jackson Pollock was. This movie portrays his life. Ed Harris does a wonder job as Pollock. He really makes you feel like he actually is Jackson Pollock. You want to console him at times and yell and reprimand him at other times. Ed Harris also directed this movie and did a superb job.
Marcia Gay Harding. I'm not gonna lie. I hated her when she won the Oscar for best supporting actress this year. I loved Kate Hudson in Almost Famous and I just knew she was going to win. Imagine my huge let down when she didn't. After I watched this film, I loved Marcia Gay Harding. She is outstanding in this film as Lee Krasner, wife of Pollock. Her performance is as powerful, if not more so, than Ed Harris'. One of my favorite scenes is when Pollock screams, "I'll kill you." And she yells back, "You are killing me, you are killing me, you are killing me!" The sadness and pain in her eyes is so real. She struggle with having to be there to care for Pollock during his low points. She believes so much in his paintings and in him, she puts up with much more than most people would. Throughout the whole movie, she is there for him.
Marcia Gay Harding earned her Oscar.
Overall this is a wonderful film full of great performances all around. It shows the tragic life and death of a wonderful artist that broke the mold.
