Pros: Tom Hanks. Some island bits. Lots of it is pretty.
Cons: Screenplay. That it thinks it's a movie.

Brilliant.

Sums up the film perfectly for me.

You nailed it. FYI: so, too, did mangiotto in a terrific review.

I didn't care for this one either. For some reason, though, I couldn't work myself up to writing an epinion on it. And, now, well who wants to watch it a second time just to write something? Not me, my friend.

want to see this movie. Never. Ever. Not for anything. I finally gave in, kicking and screaming, and, instead of feeling like I thought I would - like you, for instance - I did find myself deeply invested in the story. I cared about Hanks, I thought they made a very good film with only the island to work with, really (and of course Tom Hanks' considerable talents), and I also cared about the relationship he left behind.

We do disagree completely, but I still enjoyed your review.

...was disappointed in the screenplay that seemed to take forever to jump-start, then dwelt for too long on the obvious on the island, and then minimized or ignored the more intriguing possibilities inherent in the story AFTER his return.

Oh, well.

Good post, and a valid and well-presented assessment.

Now I'll have to go rent the DVD just to make sure it's as stupid as you say it is...

well there were a couple of things (Reply to this comment)

The one thing is that it came on HBO so often, that eventually they caught me on a night when it was either a rerun of Law and Order that I had watched four or five times previously or an MTV cartoon...and so I caught the damn thing.

And then I realized that what they were trying to do was create a desert island game film for your Intro to Management styles class...if they had done it in black and white.

Picture it, with little breaks to quiz you on your choices for what washes up on the beach, and then toward the end it lists out the things that you really needed to make it on the island...hehe

I was on the "road to Amarillo" with this film from the start, I thought it was just horrible.

great review, I wouldn't have given it two stars
cheers

It's a bad script. Great job trouncing it.

Is there such a thing as an "Ambient Film"? (Reply to this comment)

Nice deconstruction. Functions well as background filler - though it does manage to grasp your concern for Hanks character I still felt manipulated by the Fedex aspect. I'm glad I caught it on HBO instead of paying the $10 Manhattan movie rates while wondering what the product placement fees must have cost on this one.

Best recommendation: when it's on the tube, set channel to this movie while rearranging the closets.

I really like some of his films as well, this one just worked too hard on some things to the detriment of the overall screenplay.

Thanks for the read and comment.

I know how you feel. I watched it more or less accidentally.

You're quite right about mangiotto's review.

That's a dangerous way to pick movies to watch. Well, if you're hoping to enjoy any that is.

Appreciate the comment.

Hmmmmm.... interesting idea. I think you might have something there.

It's pretty tough to get one star from me, in a sense. I mean, if there is anything there that I can think is fairly positive then I give it two at least.

Thanks for the comment.

A supremely bad movie. And i thought it was way more Tom Hanks than anybody would ever need. A better movie would have been to redo Robinson Crusoe. This movie was hard to watch and very very boring and silly. How or why anybody would rate it highly shocks the hell out of me.
