Dracula 2000 ~ Gerard Butler Can Bite Me Anytime!

Pros:Gerard Butler!

Cons:A few discrepancies

The Bottom Line: I'ma deny the bottom line 3 times...

Plot Details: This opinion reveals everything about the movie's plot.

Having heard so many bad things about this one, I hadn't rushed out to see it.. but the curiosity finally got the better of me so I rented it this week. Oh my oh my.... Yes, I'm bucking the curve yet again. I loved Dracula 2000

In this tale of the voracious vampire, Van Helsing has ol' Dracula all locked up in a vast safe with tons of safeguards to keep him from walking the Earth ever again. He doesn't trust anyone else to be guarding such a treasure though, so he sifts Drac's blood through leeches (eww) and uses it to keep himself alive.

Along the way he apparently sired a daughter who now has the count's blood in her (yeah yeah I know) and Drac is drawn to one of his own kind.. a born vampire rather than a made one. Once some bumbling fools try to rob the safe and inadvertantly cut him loose, the game is on.

Now, I know there were quite a few inconsistancies in this one. Silver? Umm no. Bloodlines? Highly improbable at best. But, I like my vampires sexy, and Gerard Butler certainly fills that bill. Oh yes indeedy he does.

I fell in lust with him in Timeline and then again in Attila. Now it's becoming super lust.. I may have to stalk him. heh. Lest you think Butler is just a pretty face, he does know how to act too. No, really. Those eyes of his are soooo expressive, and the vocal inclinations.. ooh just sends shivers up my spine.

You Brits like to sweet-talk. You Brits like to romance, and all I wanna do is suck.

He's not the only good one here though.. the sexiest yes, but not the only star by any means. Oh no, we have Christopher Plummer as Van Helsing here folks. Twelve Monkeys? Dial M for Murder? The Man Who Would Be King? 129 credits here folks, and then another 16 where he appears as himself. Excellent actor.

Now we do have Justine Waddell (Mansfield Park, Great Expectations as the daughter, and blood kin to Dracula. Eh. Wasn't thrilled with her. She can act ok, no problem with her performance really.. just, well, if Butler is gonna be cast to stalk some young lady..well.. she should be mildly gorgeous. Just my warped perspective.

The absolutely hunka-hunka Jonny Lee Miller plays Van Helsing's apprentice, Simon, and what a great job he does! You may remember this lad as Zero Cool in Hackers. Well he's grown up a bit and hubba hubba! Boy can act too. No doubt about it. I'ma have to keep an eye out for the release of his Mindhunters this year.

Spoilers Ahead! Run!

What I liked most about this one was the twist. While it doesn't make any sense at all on a vampire myth level, it works great as a bit of a zinger. You see, apparently this Dracula is Judas and this is his punishment for turning Jesus in. I loved this!

Ok, Safe to come back now

Patrick Lussier was the director on this one and while many didn't like it at all, I did. So there. Lussier is the one who gave us Vampire in Brooklyn too. He seems to work with Wes Craven quite a bit. He also did the Scream franchise.

The run time here is 99 minutes and it's Rated R for violence/gore, language and some sexuality. Yeah yeah there is all that... I dunno. I'm pretty lax about that kinda stuff. I think sheltered kids end up way more screwed up than the ones who are allowed to watch this kinda stuff and then discuss whatever with their parents. So I'm like 10 and up on this one.

So yeah there are some warped theories that go against the whole vampire myth here, but I still enjoyed it a great deal. I'm going with 4 stars and do recommend it to most folks who like a good vampire flick, but appreciate twists on the standard tale.

*And ya getta see Butler's Nekkid butt!
