About Me: Time for something new.

Xchange - Kim Coates, Kyle MacLachlan, and Steven Baldwin Xchange bodies in this xtremely cool_movie

Written: Dec 26 '09 (Updated Dec 26 '09)
Pros:Very cool concept.
Cons:A bit graphic when it comes to sex and violence.
The Bottom Line: What a cool concept - I have to say I enjoyed this movie.

Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.

A fascinating concept and a fun film!  I'm talking about Xchange, the movie showing a futuristic society where technology has definitely evolved.

What a cool concept... Say you're in New York, and you need to be in a meeting in Japan, tomorrow.  At the same time, a Japanese tourist is on his way to New York.  What's the fastest way for you both to get to your destinations?  Switch bodies.  That's right!  Mutually agree to swap bodies.  You attend your meeting, in the Japanese man's body.  And the tourist will "ooh" and "ah" all over New York, using your body.  Later, exchange back.  Nothing could possibly go wrong, right?

Toffler (Kim Coates) is a CEO in New York, and his boss wants him to attend a meeting in California, three hours from now.  So this will be Toffler's first "float".  He (and we, the viewers) will be given an orientation to the process, and he'll sign a bunch of forms with the rules (not allowed to use illegal drugs in the host body, not allowed to go skydiving, etc).  And then Bam! - he's in California in the body previously occupied by Fisk (Kyle MacLachlan).  And, of course, Fisk is where he wants to be, in New York, in Toffler's body.

All is going according to plan, until it's time to exchange back.  Because Fisk doesn't show up at the Xchange office for the switchback.  It seems he's taken off, basically abducting Toffler's body.  You see, Fisk isn't who he presented himself to be, when he signed up with Xchange.  He's actually a pretty nasty terrorist - up to no good.

The three main actors did tremendous jobs.  Yes, I said three.  That's because there's one more host body that's going to come into the picture - that of Steven Baldwin.  So three actors (Coates, MacLachlan, and Baldwin) all play the same two people.  An amazing feat, actually, and one that can get a bit confusing.  Don't fall asleep during this movie, or you'll likely lose track of exactly which body is which character.

The entire story must be taken with a large grain of salt, that's for sure.  Initially I had a lot of trouble wrapping my head around this concept.  I kept thinking what if I did it, then came back and found my hair a different color, or a tattoo on my shoulder, or - worse - what if I found myself pregnant!!  There are just so many things that could go wrong, lending out my body.  But thoughts like that distract from the movie.  Once I allowed myself to just accept the concept, the movie really did get to be fun.  Well, "fun" might not be the best word for it.

There is a LOT of violence in this movie, and a few scenes designed for total gross-out.  There's also a LOT of sex.  So, use your judgment whether you want to see this one, or not.  But if you can handle violence and sex, and you can keep characters straight in your head even if their bodies are switched, you might find this movie to be a very entertaining way to spend 100 minutes.

Besides its main concept, this movie is full of all kinds of nifty technological advances that are just really fun to watch.  With terrific performances and a cool concept, I have to say I enjoyed this movie, even with the required grain of salt.
