Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
Late last night, after everyone had gone to bed, I was bored so I thought I would go and rent a movie. I went to Blockbuster without even knowing what I wanted to rent. I found Proof Of Life(Meg Ryan and Russell Crowe) first and I was going to rent it, but then I saw Save the Last Dance and knew that it was the one that I should see. My husband doesn't like teenage romance movies, so I figured that this was the perfect time to watch this movie.
Save the Last Dance stars Julia Stiles as Sara, and Sean Patrick Thomas as Derek. It is classified as a PG-13 Romance Drama and has a running time of 113 minutes.
The Plot
Sara, who wanted to be a ballet dancer, goes to live with her father (played by Terry Kinney) after her mother dies in a car crash. She is enrolled in a rough school in the ghetto where most of the students are black. She is befriended by Chenille. Chenille has a brother who Sara is kind of interested in. Derek (Chenille's brother) attempts to teach Sara to be "cool" and dance in the hip-hop fashion. The two of them become a couple, but have problems dealing with the prejudices of other people, due to the fact that Sara is white and Derek is black. This leads to them breaking up, but still longing for each other. Near the end of the movie, there is a tragic scene involving Derek's friend Malaki that anybody could see coming from a mile away.
That's a very brief description of the plot, but I don't want to ruin this film for anybody who hasn't seen it yet. I will say that I truly loved this film. I don't look too deeply into a plot. I mainly watch movies solely for the entertainment value and in my opinion this movie provided the entertainment I was looking for.
Julia Stiles is an excellent actress and I look forward to her future projects. I don't recall seeing Sean Patrick Thomas in any previous movies, but I will be looking for him to star in future releases. I feel that both of them did a superb job in Save The Last Dance and I plan on watching this movie again before it's due back at Blockbuster!
