Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
Since most people review only the movie, I am going to do both. The movie and the DVD. As we all know, DVD's contain extra materials not usually found on VHS tapes. Those can be extra scenes, outtakes, director commentary's, features on the movie, preview trailers...the list goes on and on.
The Movie
We rented this movie(thankfully) because of Jack. Normally he is a very good actor and plays in good movies. And from reading the back of the box at the video store, this one looked good.
However, I thought this movie was lacking, a lot. The premise was good. A man on the verge of retiring makes a promise to a mother of a murdered daughter to catch the man responsible. And a promise is a promise, so even after he retires, he continues to investigate the murder, obsessively.
But the movie falls short in the suspense factor, you never really feel like there is any danger to and of the characters, and you never really feel much of anything for them either. One great performance is Benicio Del Toro in a very small role as Toby. I wouldn't have recognized him until I noticed his name in the credits. The more movies of Benicio's I see, the more I see he is a very good actor.
Jack shows a side of him that we sort of saw in The Shining. The obsession of a man who eventually is driven crazy. Nothing really new here.
The quality of the movie on the DVD was very good. It was shown in widescreen(yes the black bars). There was no dust on the print that I noticed, so the spots on the movie were non-existent. Colors in the movie held up nicely, when the entire screen was white from snow, there was no problem with swirls. Some DVD's have problems when a single color is used excessively, generally a problem when they make the DVD.
I give the movie 5/10
The Audio
The movie was presented in Dolby Digital 5.1. But the surround speakers were rarely used. Even in the scenes of Jack's retirement party, the speakers were hardly used. They could have been used for more immersion into the movie, but weren't.
The Audio gets a 6/10
The Extras
The Extras on this DVD did not even exists. They had trailers which are hardly an extra. And they also had Cast and Crew bios, which are hardly an extra. So this DVD left me very disappointed in this area. At least take some time to put some effort into the new format, and make people want to buy the DVD.
The Extras get a 2/10
Overall
Overall the presentation of the movie was done fairly well, with good color tones and decent music. But personally I felt the movie was very anti-climatic. The climax came, and left without any excitement. And the ending of the movie left a lot unknown. Sure Jack's character (Jeremy Black) had taken to the bottle, and slipped into some kind of craze, but that's all we know. So personally, I feel that this movie is not worth either the two hours of your life, or the $4 it would cost you to rent it.
Overall I give this a 5/10
