Awesome review. I look forward to reading more.
I'm a big Jaoui/Bacri fan and just saw their latest film, "Comme une Image". I don't know whether it's set to be distributed in the US or not, but if you get a chance to see it, you must-- it's arguably even better than Les gouts des autres.
Best, and keep up your fabulous writing

I wish I knew. My French extends to being able say, but probably not spell properly, merci and bonjour.
You are the second person who has suggested that translation, so perhaps you're right. If so, I don't remember anything in the movie that would help to get the joke, or to try to help you get it.
Perhaps this is another reason to see the movie.

Sounds delightful! (Reply to this comment)

You and Teresa are both so good at capturing the essence of French films. Sometimes I find it hard to put into words exactly what appeals to me about French comedies. I guess I just find their sense of humor to be really charming in a subtle sort of way, and I like the way the actors deliver their lines - so matter-of-factly like they are completely unaware of the audience. The Taste of Others sounds like a gem. Thanks for the recommendation! I plan to check out The Dinner Game as well, especially since it is directed by Francis Veber.
Nice job!

You Know How To (Reply to this comment)

...get the old wheels a-turning, don't you?
Am I wrong in thinking that The Taste of Others should translate into French as Le goût de d'autres? And that Le Goût des Outres translates as Taste of the Goatskin Bottles in English? And, in either case, would this more appropriately refer to something more to do with flavor than with preference, etiquette, urbanity or choice? How far off am I? Or, am I totally on the wrong track?
See. Now, you've got me wondering.
Enjoyed your review. Sounds like an interesting (amusing) movie, too. Yours is another perfect choice for Bastille Day.
