korned_beef's Full Review: Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
Personally.. I'd say it was "Crofty". With Lara, Lara and more Lara on the screen, it was really "Crofty". As for the plot it was without a shadow of a doubt... Crap.
Its amazing as to where video games can take us… especially movie directors. Nowadays movie directors are so desperate when it comes to chalking up good stories that they turn to making movies from PC games! I can’t believe that “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” actually qualifies to be a movie. To me it was a very bland advertisement to the TR games.
Heck! Can a frail, slick looking chick actually overpower a powerful bot with powerful hydraulics and actually “bend” its “arms” to shred itself with its own saws? How about this… You “run” away from a rain of bullets but it seems to be more like you’re chasing them. Besides, there was no such thing as a story. No romance, no human expressions, nothing.
I think it was more of watching an android (ie Lara) with no human expressions, which was programmed to love only her father and obey him and do nothing else. Her enemies were more like soft toys waiting to be ripped apart by her only trusty “super handguns”. The computer generated “things” were really pathetic. Even the game’s animators would have done a better job. (If they did any work on it, they really could have done a lot better than that.) The action sequences I think got way too fast at times for a person to actually know what happened. The basic setup of the movie although obscure didn’t actually sparkle any surprise or awe. The plot was so bland that even a two year old could have figured out what was coming next. There were no such things as a twist in the story. The plot could have had a more spiritual and human experience if only it was a wee bit slow and Lara could have got a bit careworn somewhere in the movie. Never in the movie did she really did get hurt. Her only bullet wound was healed instantly by a priest’s “super drink”. There was no part in the film which came to the… “No Pain No Gain” situation. So basically this a very bland action movie… and that’s where I feel things went wrong
But hey! There still exist some good points. Or should I say one good point. Need I say more? Nope… I sincerely think it had to be Angelina Jolie. Her close resemblance to the CGI “Lara Croft” actually gave me the craving to expect more from the movie. Had it not been for her I probably would have quit watching the rest movie by the time she was done by the first action scene. Her curvaceous body and luscious movements took my breath away. Her teasing ways were extremely alluring. I’ve seen a lot of movies made on video games and they sucked big time. One of them has to be “street fighter”… puke! Leave alone how silly they made characters looked. The moves in the movie were sillier and yawnfully unconvincing (compared to the game). As for “Mortal Kombat”, they managed to get the characters right and the story was rather interesting too. “MK Annihilation” basically annihilated itself as a lousy sequel. So where does all this leave Tomb Raider? I think “Tomb Raider” sits in nicely between getting the characters right…(or should I say "the character" right) and getting the story wrong. So who’ll watch this film? Those females who have recently broken up with boyfriends, and are in desperate need of motivation may actually consider watching this flick. As for the rest, I suggest you avoid it. No fans will like this one for sure. This is a major disaster when it comes to being movie. But as for me, I wouldn’t mind watching the intriguing Angelina Jolie all over again….
