Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.
I walked out of the video store yesterday believing I had made two good choices as usual. I remembered to bring my reading glasses this time so I could read the back of the video and somewhat see what I am getting into.
I figured "Memento" had Guy Pearce in it. Guy Pearce was in "L.A. Confidential". He was the guy who made Lieutenant by sticking to the book. He was the guy with glasses who in the end was in the shootout with my honey Russell. I can't even mention his name without getting a hot flash. Nowadays I can mention anyone's name and get a hot flash, ha.
The other movie I rented was "Ed Gein". I won't even go there. I don't shock easily. I have seen brains and eyeballs in my Paramedic days so seeing them in a video wasn't gross but this one is downright bad (digging up dead bodies, etc.)it is a sick one and it isn't even entertaining. I like scary stuff but this is untastefully yuk. My only reason for mentioning this movie is so you can see what a waste of movie watching type of night I had.
Back to "Memento" the stars in this one are, Guy Pearce, Carry Ann Moss, and Joe Pantoliana (Matrix, U.S. Marshalls).
It is rated R and it comes in DVD.
The Director of this movie is Christopher Nolan. It is 116 minutes in length.
If you have read some of my other movie reviews you know that my idea of a relaxing movie is to sit with no distractions, my three dogs by my side, my boyfriend either in the other room watching his football or gone,(due to the fact if Clint Eastwood is not in the movie it bores him) and my cold beer. This is my idea of peace on earth.
I put my beer in the freezer for ten minutes. Tookmy warm bubble bath, put on my froggie p.j.s, got the chair set up just right, melted some cheese with jalapenos and got some fritos, grabbed my beer, turned off the kitchen light, put the phone within reach, sat down, got up and went to the bathroom, sat down again, pushed in the video, and let out a sigh of relaxation.
"Ed Gein" was first on my agenda. I already told you what a barforama this one was so on to "Memento"
I will sum "Memento" up from my point of view. Guy Pearce plays a guy named Leonard who use to work for an Insurance Company as a Claim Investigator. His wife got murdered one night in a home invasion. Leonard has short term memory loss apparently from the night his wife was attacked his head hit the wall when he was attacked. WAIT! I'm not sure he was attacked because it flashes back over and over again and the story seems to change at times.
Leonard decides to get revenge yet he continually forgets what has just happened and we get knocked back in time over and over again. When Leonard meets a new person that means something in this mystery he takes a poloroid and writes on the back of the picture so when he forgets he can remember and''''''''
WE START ALL OVER AGAIN!!!!!
I went and got another beer.
I turned the remote back on. Leonard keeps flashing back to one of his insurance claim investigations where the guy has the same condition he has but he didn't believe him.
The whole premise of this movie is that Leonard wants to get revenge for his wife's murder and he is looking for who murdered her. He can only remember what is happening now and he takes the poloroid and makes notes so he remembers.
THE PROBLEM IS WE KEEP GETTING DRAGGED BACK OVER AND OVER AGAIN ON WHAT HE JUST DID!!!! We are in his brain. Now if I was a artsy craftsy intellectual maybe I would have picked up on something redeeming but I was using a lot of energy trying to figure out the plot.
Leonard meets Carrie Ann Moss who is a Bartender and the girlfriend of a Drug Dealer. For a couple of scenes we see Leonard making love, waist up,to her. Then we flash back again to him, at least three times, trying to remember who she is.
Joe Pantoliano comes along as Freddy. He is suppose to be a rogue type cop who befriends Leonard. We never really know if he is a bad guy or good guy. In the beginning it shows Leonard blowing Freddy's brains out but in the end we really never find out if that happened because your so damn confused you could scream. You can't tell reality from Leonard's brain malfunctions. We keep flashing back several times to remember Freddy, whether Leonard killed him, whether he is good cop bad cop, whether he is dead in the beginning or in the end and for crying out loud WHAT ROOM IS LEONARD IN!!!!!
Is Carry Ann Moss(Natalie in the movie) bad or good. Did her boyfriend die in the beginning or end. Does she know Freddy. Is this a set up.
I would be happy if we ever found out BUT WE DON'T. We are left sitting in our chairs saying to ourselves as the credits roll,
WHAT THE F--------------!!!!!!
This is a "Traffic" type movie with flashing back and forth and modern day hooo haaa. I did not like it. It was not entertaining and it was extremely confusing.
The acting was fantastic. Guy Pearce was soooo skinny he looked like he has been on Meth for a year. This is what you would picture a guy who is going through this type of thing would look like. As well as taking poloroids to remember who he comes in contact with, Leonard repeatedly tattoos himself with notes, rules that tell him who and what to trust. Things such as don't answer the telephone.
If you like puzzles this may be the movie for you. I like to relax and have the movie tell me the story. This one was too much work.
The bad part about the night was I had watched Ed Gein first
and I was hoping for a night saver in Memento. The good part of the night was the Coors Light.
My dogs slept through both videos. Now,who is smarter!!
