Every year, a couple of Irish films come out that charm American audiences with their "top of the morning to ya" accents and their "the beautiful world is full of hope" hearts. From "Angela's Ashes" to "Waking Ned Devine," rarely does an Irish film stray from this norm. "About Adam" is...different. It's a comedy, but it's nothing like "The Fully Monty." It's different from anything you've seen just as a film in itself, but the Irish accents and outlook of it all makes it all the more funny and all the more unsettling.
"About Adam" is about Adam, a man who enters the life of Lucy, an attractive waitress (played by Kate Hudson) and her family. As he continues to date Lucy, the rest of the family can not help but find him absolutely charming, even Lucy's bookworm, feminist sister. But as time goes by, Adam begins having affairs with members of Lucy's family (her two sisters, and other members who I won't mention just because I don't want to spoil anything for you). The two bizarre factors are that Adam continues to be a charming, sweet and innocent man in everyone's eyes (including the audience, which can be a little disturbing), and that, although Lucy's family seems to be truly loving and happy with one another, no one seems to feel the need to mention to Lucy that they're bonking her man!!
"About Adam" is a hilarious film with a wonderful script. All of the actors give effortless performances, but the true winner is Adam himself, played by Stuart Townsend. It's a complex performance that looks almost dull on the surface, but Townsend has the uncanny ability to allow Adam to remain a mystery throughout the film, but stay completely lovable and wicked at the same time.
See "About Adam" for a good laugh, and a twisted ending. Go for the accents. Stay for the moral depravity.
