The Bottom Line: A very weak script and plot coupled with bad acting and an overall feeling of recycled material make this movie one of the worst I've seen in a long time.
Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
After all we’ve seen Steven Segal do in the past, we should learn. We should say “No, this guy can’t act and can’t pick a good script to save his life”. But we simply keep going to his movies, keep putting up with the same old schlock time after time, if only to fill a Friday night. This was why I saw the movie; my friends and I were at the theater with only seconds to decide what to watch, and ‘Exit Wounds’ was the only thing showing in our timeframe. How absolutely unlucky for us.
Walking into the movie I thought that it might just be mildly entertaining, though none of Segall’s other movies have been. My fears were proven to be justified when not 5 minutes into the movie there was a gunfight—seemingly just for the sake of having a gunfight. It was loud, mechanical, and something that I could see again and again if I wanted to go to my local video store and rent one of Segall’s countless other mindless movies. All told, roughly half of the movie constituted fighting of some sort, most of it completely unwarranted, and obnoxiously loud and meaningless. I cannot say enough about how bad this movie was.
As seems to be the trend nowadays, Hollywood is pulling more and more rappers from their roots in non-music to the silver screen as a test to see if indeed they can act any better than they sing. While DMX doesn’t do a bad job as Latrell Walker, the computer entrepreneur trying to get his innocent brother freed from a federal penitentiary, it’s not enough to save this movie from the likes of Orin Boyd (Segall). Boyd has weak, recycled lines, a mindless demeanor projecting himself as a bad actor getting paid a ridiculous amount of money to be filmed doing what he does best…screw up.
In the film Segall is paired with Isaiah Washington and together the two try to take on the whole of the 15th precinct by themselves, as it is infested with dirty cops. Their unlikely ally in the end turns out to be DMX playing Walker who is secretly capturing police corruption on videotape in the hopes of freeing his brother.
This movie could definitely benefit from a plot, script, and cast overhaul… or better yet it might not have been produced at all. This would save you and me $6.50 of our hard-earned money and 2 hours that we could have been doing more important things, like scrubbing our toilets. Honestly, I would rather see Teletubbies 24/7 than have to endure this movie for more than 5 minutes… it’s that bad.
