Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
Parents who think Hollywood never makes any quality family films, should give Spy Kids a chance. To say Spy Kids is the best family film of the year would be an understatement. This has been a year of such family films as See Spot Run. Spy Kids is not only the best family film of the year, it is the most original, light-hearted, and the most fun film of the year.
Who would have thought the man who directed one of my favorite horror films of all time, From Dusk Till Dawn, would be responsible for one of the best children's films of recent memory. When I mean children's film, I don't mean a film strictly for children, not by any means. Spy Kids in all honesty will probably be more enjoyed by adults. Now that I think about it, it's not hard to fathom that Robert Rodriguez would make a film like Spy Kids. It has lot of action, minus the violence. It has style, is well written, has good actors, etc.
The film has a relatively simple plot, but it's a charming one nonetheless. Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino play a married couple who have two kids. They use to be spies however, and were hired to off each other. Well as luck would have it, the two best spies in the world would fall in love, get married and settle down.
Their children have no idea about their past. They don't think their parents are cool enough to be secret agents. But when their parents are captured by Fegan Floop, played by the always charming Alan Cumming. It's up to the kids to save them.
It's amazing how well the film is pulled off. Every single actor in the film seems to be just right for their role. I was very surprised by the child actors. Surprised for two reasons. First, they are actually good at acting. And secondly, and most important, they are not annoying. It seems today every kid actor you put in a film is annoying. A lot of the times they ruin the quality of the film, like the little girl in Remember The Titans did.
Looking on the IMDB I was surprised to see that Spy Kids only has a 35 million dollar budget. That's surprising. It looks like it could have easily gone over the 100 million dollar budget. The kids have neat little gadgets that would make James Bond jealous. Some of the sets are so wild you could have sworn that you were watching a Tim Burton film.
This is a fast fun film for the whole family. It not only delivers on the action, the special effects, and the comedy, but also a positive message to children. That message is, nothing is more important than family.
