Pros: Johnny Depp gives an intense and thrilling performance. And Pee Wee Herman rocks!!
Cons: The last third may bum you out and it tends to drag on
The Bottom Line: BLOW is an engaging and funny film that is able to become more than just about drugs due to the amazing performances by Johnny Depp and his supporting cast.
Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
Ted Demme has not had what you would call an illustrious film career. In fact, you might argue that he has always been in the shadow of his nephew, Jonathon Demme, director of "Silence of the Lambs." Ted's credits include "Who's the Man," a decent comedy/cop drama featuring Ed Lover and Dr. Dre, with every rapper in existence-from Kriss Kross to Busta Rhymes-doing a cameo, and "Life," a draining film with Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence, two comics that are much too over the top to ever be good together. But now, Ted Demme seems to finally produced a good film, that is, one worth seeing for its script, performances, AND direction!!! And it's got a great title with which so many bad puns can be made (mostly sexual) that I can't resist but make one (and ONLY one, and that's a promise): this movie Blew me away! (hahahahaha, I kill me)
If you want to see a serious film about the harrowing effects of the Columbian drug exchange on America's youth, see "Traffic." If you want to see a smart, funny, fresh, and invigorating film about the drug exchange featuring Pee Wee Herman as a male hair dresser/marijuana dealer, see "Blow"!!
"Blow" chronicles the true life of drug dealer Georgie Jung, a man who went from a lower class home to a wealthy pot smuggler to a fugitive to a milionaire cocaine dealer to a convict and so on and so on. The film rollercoasters through an extremely volatile life and continues to keep you involved and entertained throughout it.
Johnny Depp is simply astounding as the main character. Here he is supplying the country with a highly addictive and dangerous drug and yet you love him. Throughout the film, all you care about is his happiness. He vows as a kid that he's going to have a great life, and you just want to see him do it. "Blow" completely depends on the lead performance, and Depp delivers.
As for the rest of the cast, they're all great as well. There's Penelope Cruz who gives a star-making performance as Depp's schizo wife. There's Jordi Mello who's really lovable but kinda creepy as his drug partner and cellmate. This film is just filled with great characters. There's a hot blond named Barbie and a fat guy named Tuna! What more could you want?
"Blow" gives you an inside look at the drug trade throughout the 70s and 80s, but it never really shows you its effects on its users, except for Georgie and his friends. That's because "Blow" isn't trying to solve America's drug crisis or open your eyes to some startling truth. It's just trying to show you the humanity in the life of this one man, and it does it beautifully. So go out and see "Blow," before I have to come over and huff-and-puff-and BLOW your house down!! (sorry, couldn't resist)
