Pokemon 3 spell of the unknown review

Written: May 04 '01 (Updated May 04 '01)
Pros:darker animation better stroy then other 2
Cons:pikachu and pichu
The Bottom Line: The pokemon movies keep getting better and better.

Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.

Last month I was disappointed because my theater closed, just a few days before this open. Luckily yesterday my theater reopened and was showing this. So tonight I took my younger brothers to see Pokemon 3 the spell of the unknown.

Like all Pokemon movies it comes with a Pokemon mini show, and then the main movie.

Pikachu and Pichu.
When Pikachu gets separated from the rest of the gang, he has to relay on the mischievous Pichu brothers to get back before Ash finds he's missing. Of course this isn’t going to be easy seeing how they manage to tick off a Houndoor (a big street dog type Pokemon.)Like all Pokemon mini movies they try to cram in has many Pokemon has they can, but this time they built up more of a plot. Also the chase with Houndoor does have it's funny parts, but still if your not a Pokemon fan you might want to take a nap while this is playing.

Spell of the unknown.
When Professor hale disappears while researching the unknown; he leaves his daughter Molly orphan. Molly accidentally releases the unknown while playing with mysterious blocks that her father had. Now the unknown have the power to make anybody's dreams into a reality. Molly dreams up her favorite Pokemon Enti up to be her father. Because of Molly's wishes the interior of her house becomes another reality, and the outside becomes completely crystal.

Now enter young twerp from Pallet town and his two sidekicks; Brock and Misty. They discover the crystal tower on their journey because Misty want's to see the town that is located at. They meet Professor Oak and Ash's Mom when they arrive there. There both there because they where both friends with Prof. Hale and his daughter and they want to check on her. When Molly remembers Mrs. Ketchum from one of her visits she has Enti kidnap her and bring her to the tower. Now it's up to Ash to rescue Molly and his mom. This isn’t going to be easy because in order to get to the top of the tower Ash will have to deal with Enti, and anything that Molly's imagination cooks up.

If your wondering what Unknown are I'll give you a line from Meowth. They look like alphabet soup without the soup.

My thoughts.
All right here the line up. I liked Pokemon 1 darker story line, but got turn off by the bad dialogue (the let's not ever fight again lines from team rocket nearly made me loose it). Pokemon 2000 had a better story line and had all the heart of the series, however I wouldn’t have minded if it had been a bit darker. Pokemon 3 does a good job of keeping a darker story line then the series, without it going to pot at the end. The unknown and their tower are creepy, and you definitely get a bad feeling whenever Enti comes on the screen.

Also unlike the first movie the characters act the same has in the series. Ash makes rash and sometime foolish decisions, Brock hits on girl’s etc. To give an example to what I mean in the first part of the movie Ash gets into a battle with a female trainer. After doing the usual introduction line of I’m Ash from Pallet town. Brock runs up saying "I’m Brock from Pewter I want to be your boyfriend. The only thing that doesn’t happen is Misty doing her usual pounding of Ash upside the head.

Animation.
While the animation for the most part remains true to the other movies. (step above the series with some CGI thrown in.) The colors are a lot darker, and it fits in to the moody nature of the film. Has far has the animation it’s excellent with the unknown being all in CGI.

Voice acting.
I personally like the voice acting in the movie. All the voices from the series are there, and they all sound like they should. Ash sounds like a ten year old boy (a high pitch ten year old boy, but a ten year old boy non the less), Brock sounds like a teenager, and Misty sounds like her winy 12-yearoldself.

All in all I think the Pokemon movies keep getting better with each one released, lets hope that Pokemon 4 will be even better.
