Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
Wet Hot American Summer takes place at Camp Firewood on the last day of camp. Everyone is trying to cherish the last moments. Each character is comedic. The Camp Director, Beth (Janeane Garofalo), is busy falling in love with the astrophysicist Henry (David Hyde Pierce). The nerd (Michael Showlater) is trying to get some attention from the typical beautiful girl (Marguerite Moreau). The Arts and Crafts teacher (Molly Shannon) is taking marriage advice from one of her young campers. The camp cook (Christopher Meloni) is a war veteran who is completely nuts, and to top it all off, the guy with the excessive testosterone levels is trying everything to get some action.
This movie explores the lives of the counselors beyond any depth I've ever known possible. One of the funniest things about this movie though, is that the campers are totally oblivious to what's going on with their counselors. This movie is an amazing and daring attempt to spoof other youth-comedies such as Scary Movie and Not Another Teen Movie.
I saw this movie because I saw that Molly Shannon and Janeane Garofalo were in it. I am a rather loyal fan to these 2 actresses, so I owed it to them to see this movie. Another reason I bought the ticket was because I was in the mood for a comedy that encompassed intelligent and goofy humor. I have to be honest though, I walked into the theater expecting some feeble attempt at a comedy. Listen to me when I tell you that I was way off in my prediction. This movie turned out to be both clever and funny, and I was delighted to have seen it.
Although their attempt to create a good spoof is mostly successful, this movie fails to fit a large demographic. The people that would most highly appreciate this movie are teens in the mood for silly, and somewhat intelligent humor.
In comparison to other teen-comedies like Not Another Teen Movie and Scary Movie, this one is far more intelligent and way more original. Teen Movie is a direct spoof of Can't Hardly Wait, She's All That, and Breakfast Club, while Scary Movie is a direct spoof of Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. Although American Summer is more original and intelligent it is almost twice as random. THIS GIVES AWAY A LITTLE PLOT --- (For example, the movie cuts to a scene where the counselors are buying cocaine, and then it cuts to a scene where they are all lying around shooting heroin.) --- THIS GIVES AWAY A LITTLE PLOT.
Basically, this makers of this movie nailed their goal at creating a hilarious spoof, because they improved upon the mistakes made by the makers of Porky's and Meatballs. If you want; laugh out loud and daring comedy, you should check this out.
